Early life and education

Karen was raised an only child in Philadelphia by her father who was a firefighter, and her mother who was a seamstress.

She attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, and while there decided that she would one day become a popular actress. Karen matriculated in 1983, and then enrolled at Howard University from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1987 – while attending her senior year, Karen became Miss Howard University.
