Aside from her own accomplishments, Maria is also known for being the wife of actor Andy Garcia.
Who is Andy Garcia?
Cuban-American director and actor Andrés Arturo García Menéndez, was born on 12 April 1956 in Havana, Cuba, into Catholic family. His father, René García Núñez, was first an attorney and avocado farmer in Cuba, before moving to the US and owning a fragrance business. His mother, Amelie Menéndez, taught English. Andy has an older sister, Tessi and an older brother, René.
Following the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, Andy’s family moved to Miami, Florida, when he was five years old. It was in Miami that René raised his successful, million-dollar perfume company.
Andy played in his high school basketball team while attending Miami Beach Senior High School. He fell ill with mononucleosis while in his last year of high school, which was an instigator for him choosing a career in acting, as during his senior year, he attended drama classes taught by Jay W. Jensen. Following matriculation, Andy attended and graduated from Florida International University.
He then moved to Hollywood, and truly began his acting career.
In 1983, he played Ricardo in the film “Guaguasi,” and eventually gained fame after appearing as Vincent Mancini, Sonny Corleone’s bastard son, in “The Godfather III” in 1990, specifically chosen by director Francis Ford Coppola. His choice thankfully paid off, as Andy was nominated as Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance.
His next major role was in 1999, when he appeared in “Just the Ticket,” portraying Gary Starke. In 2001, he played Terry Benedict, an arrogant Las Vegas casino owner in “Ocean’s Eleven”, a remake of the 1960 caper movie.”
In 2004, Andy appeared in the sequel, “Ocean’s Twelve,” and once again in the 2007 sequel, “Ocean’s Thirteen.” In 2002, Andy won the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his performance in “Ocean’s Eleven.”
2018 was a massive year for Andy – professionally speaking – as he starred in four films. He played Fernando Cienfuegos in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”, starring alongside Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, Stellan Skarsgaard, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Cher, in what was a huge success both at the box office and critically.
The film received a rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes; one critic review read, ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again doubles down on just about everything fans loved about the original – and my my, how can fans resist it?’ In an interview with NBC’s Today show, Andy shared his experience of singing with Cher, ‘It was sublime. One thing is to act with Cher, who is a great actress, and then to be asked to sing with her.’
As of late 2020, Andy’s net worth is estimated at over $20 million, his fortune coming from his work as an actor, director, and film producer.
He owns a mansion in Miami, Florida, valued at $3 million, and a Cadillac valued at $60,000.
Andy also owns a Cuban-styled home in Key Biscayne, Florida, built on a 9082 square foot (843.75 square meters) property, has four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, a pool, a private dock, and a master suite, and which is valued at $4 million. In 2014, Andy was reportedly looking for a tenant to rent his home out for $30,000 a month!
