Maya was raised alongside her brother Thomas Jr. in San Antonio, by their father Thomas Sr. who is a personal injury lawyer, and their mother Azteca who is a former model – just recently on 3 September 2020, Azteca filed for divorce.

Maya became interested in modelling while attending elementary school, as she and her peers would often watch movies and TV series as well as read girly magazines. She became physically active upon enrolling in high school, as she played soccer and was also a member of the school’s drama club, appearing in many of the plays performed there.
