Considered one of the most technically skilled active boxers, Lara is also considered one of the best active light middleweight boxers. He is the current WBA (Regular) light middleweight champion. He previously won WBA light middleweight title in 2014 and IBO light middleweight in 2015. He made numerous title defenses before losing his titles to Jarrett Hurd in April 2018.
On the national level, he won three consecutive national championships. He captained the Cuban national amateur team that won a gold medal at the 2005 World Championship and a silver medal at the 2005 World Cup.
