- He started playing football for the youth team of Shrewsbury Town and began his career at the club. He made his senior debut on 20 April 2004, a day after his 17th birthday in the match against Gravesend & Northfleet.
- He did not play again until April of the following year, as Scott Howie dominated goalkeeping duties. With Shrewsbury back in the Football League (the newly renamed League Two) and struggling, he played six matches, conceding four goals.

- On 8 August 2011, he signed a new contract until 2016. During his 2011-12 season, he made 51 appearances for the club, keeping 20 clean sheets in all the competitions as he helped Manchester City to win their first Premier League title, and first top-flight title for 44 years, which they clinched on the final day of the season by beating Queens Park Rangers by 3-2.
