Tracey was raised alongside her younger brother Michael McQuarn, who is now a film producer and director, by their father who was a businessman, and their mother who was a lawyer. Deion was raised in Fort Myers, and played football, baseball and basketball while attending North Fort Myers High School. Upon matriculation in 1985, he was selected by the Kansas City Royals baseball team, but decided not to sign with them and attend Florida State University being their football and baseball player, and running track for them. In 1988, he received the Jim Thorpe Award from the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Upon graduation, he became a football player but continued playing baseball part-time, playing with four teams for nine years.
