Christiana Ann Nichol was born on 11 September 1962, in Los Angeles, California USA; she has an older brother, Jimmy McNicol, a former actor and singer. They both started to appear in commercials, then in time Kristy began to star in TV series such as “Love, American Style”, “Starsky&Hutch”, “The Love Boat” and “The Bionic Woman”, all in the period 1969-1978.

Desi Arnaz, an actor, musician and film/TV producer was their family friend and he helped them to start child actor careers. In 1974 Kristy appeared in the CBS series “Apple’s Way”, and two years later she played Letitia Lawrence in the TV series “Family”, for which she won two Grammy Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama series in 1977 and 1979.

With “Black Sunday” in 1977, Kristy started her movie career, but her scenes were later deleted, but the next year she played in “The End” with Sally Field and Burt Reynolds.

In 1980, Kristy appeared in the movies “Little Darlings” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”, since when she started to receive six figure salaries. The following year she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie “Only When I Laugh”. However, Kristy was nominated for worst actress in 1982 at Golden Raspberry Awards, for “The Pirate Movie”. While filming “Just The Way You Are” she experienced an emotional breakdown, so the filming was paused for a year.

Later McNicol played in “Women of Valor”, and in the theatrical movies “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “Two Moon Junction”. She played Barbara Weston in “Empty Nest”, left the show but returned in 1995 for the final episode, which was actually her last performance on the screen. However she had two more roles, a voice character in the animated series’ “Extreme Ghostbusters” in 1997 and “Invasion America” in 1998.

In 1977 Kristy performed with The Carpenters at Christmas, so the next year she and her brother Jimmy recorded for RCA Records the album “Kristy and Jimmy McNicol”, with singles “He’s so Fine” and “Page By Page”.

The album was promoted by many celebrities in New York. She performed again in 1978 with The Carpenters “A Christmas Portrait”. In 1981 and ‘82 she recorded soundtrack albums for “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” and “The Pirate Movie”. After her retirement, Kristy McNicol continued to teach acting in private schools in Los Angeles, as well as focusing on charity work.

Personal life

In an interview in 2012, Kristy McNicol revealed the truth behind her sexuality, so her fans finally understood her decision to quit acting and withdraw from the public eye.

She admitted that she is a lesbian, and for 20 years had lived with her partner and wife Marie Allen, whom she married in 1991. Kristy had released a statement in 2001 saying that it was time to focus on herself after 24 years in acting. She waited so long to speak in public, because she wasn’t ready, but decided to come out to support young people who go through the same as a result of same gender relationships. Kristy also revealed that the emotional breakdowns she suffered during her career were from the same reasons.

“I was on the big stage between ages 8 and 30. I left show business for a variety of reasons, but a big one was my interest in learning what else there is in life … This phase of my life is so good. My home life is happy and serene. I love singing. I also enjoy traveling and seeing the world.

One of my favorite stops is Hawaii. I like everything about it and may eventually move there part-time”, said McNicol in an interview in 2014.
