Smith was 23 years old at the time of her first prominent role, in “Urban Cowboy”, a John Travolta drama western from 1980 in which she played Pam, a romantic interest of Travolta’s character, Bud. She subsequently co-starred in several films of that era, including “All of Me” from 1984 and “2010”, a sequel to “2001: A Space Odyssey” from the same year.

She appeared in several movies on television too, including “Rehearsal for Murder”, “Pray TV”, and “Deadly Intentions”. She also portrayed several real-life people, including Jehan Al Sadat, spouse of Anwar Al Sadat, former Egyptian president, in the miniseries “Sadat” from 1983, and Ernie Kovacs’ disturbed wife Dorothy, in the TV movie “Ernie Kovacs: Between the Laughter” that aired the following year.
