He probably benefits from the success of his father too, as Snoop has a net worth estimated to be over $135 million, thanks to a long successful career in the music industry.
Life and Career
Corde grew up with a lot of knowledge of the music industry thanks to his father’s fame and success. His father never forced him to pursue a similar career, and while he loved music, he didn’t have the same talent as his father. Instead, growing-up he admired the achievements of his older brother who pursued a career in sports, finding a bit of success in American Football.
He wanted to become an American Football player as well and began playing locally, but he didn’t have the same drive and physique as his brother.
Later on, his father noticed that he possessed a look that could work in modeling, and with his father’s connections, he made his first appearance in the music video “Drop It Like It’s Hot” by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams. However, he decided to complete his studies first, and enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles where he completed a bachelor’s degree.
Father – Snoop Dogg
Calvin Broadus Jr. was born on 20 October 1971, in Long Beach, California USA, where he grew-up, the son of a singer and Vietnam War veteran. However, his father left the family when he was three months old and he was raised by a stepfather whom he was named after.
At a young age, he gained the nickname Snoopy due to his likeness to the popular character, and the name stuck. He first developed a love for singing and playing the piano, before discovering rap. He loved going to church, and played American Football, also working during his free time to help his family.
He rapped frequently in school, and his skills were enough to attract large crowds which led him to believe that rap was his calling. However, during his teenage years, he frequently ran into trouble, becoming involved in a gang, and so was in and out of prison due to his involvement in cocaine dealings in his area. Wanting to shy away from that life, he began recording music at home with the help of his cousins.
One of his mixtapes would end up in the hands of Dr. Dre, who was impressed by his skills and invited him to audition.
Rise to Fame – Snoop Dogg
After joining Dr. Dre, Calvin took on the name Snoop Doggy Dog, and worked on his first project, a featured song in the album “The Chronic”. Following this success, he created his debut album “Doggystyle” which elevated him to stardom thanks to its success, and is responsible for popularizing the G-funk hip-hop typical of rappers of the West Coast during his time. Following an acquittal on a murder charge, he lived a more straightforward life, focusing on his music.
His second album “The Doggfather” was released amidst issues featuring a number of his friends who retained a gangster lifestyle.
His second album featured a change in style and tone – it didn’t fare well compared to its predecessor, but it was enough to keep his career going. In the late 1990s he signed with No Limit Records and began releasing albums with them, selling millions of each of his releases. In 2004, he then signed with Geffen Records, leading to the release of “R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece” which contained his first top single “Drop It Like It’s Hot”.
Becoming a Rap Legend – Snoop Dogg
Over the next few years, Snoop Dogg continued a fruitful relationship with Geffen Records, leading to the creation of several successful albums including “Ego Trippin’ Malice ‘n Wonderland” and “Doggumentary”. His fame on the music scene also led to acting work, and he appeared mostly in cameo roles. He also helped the creation of several television shows, including “Dogg After Dark” and “Doggy Fizzle Televizzle”. In 2009, he became the creative chairman of re-established Priority Records, which continued to build his wealth.
In 2012 he turned in a different direction in his career, as he converted to Rastafarianism after being enlightened during a trip to Jamaica. He took on the name Snoop Lion, and began releasing reggae albums. However, this phase only lasted for a year, and he returned to his Snoop Dogg name in 2015 with the release of a new album. In 2018, he announced that he had become a born again Christian, and released his first gospel album. He was also inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame thanks to his work with the company, appearing in various segments and storylines. While Snoop has enjoyed a successful career, he has yet to win a Grammy Award, but with 17 nominations under his belt.
Personal Life
Corde was in a relationship with Jessica Kyzer for many years. She is a freelance makeup artist who also works as a model. They have a child together, and married shortly after the birth of their first. In 2018, their second child was born but he had complications in his body and passed away after 10 days of life. Snoop Dogg expressed his grief, and then the joy he felt of experiencing another child in 2019, posting on several social media accounts. Many of his friends sympathized with his situation. However, the two broke up and divorced shortly after, for reasons unknown.
