Life So Far
Sonal’s parents have made it a point to keep their children away from the spotlight, and she grew up in Yellow Springs on a large 65-acre farm. Her parents decided to settle there due to the less expensive homes and neighbors who didn’t mind their celebrity status. She is of Filipino and African-American descent, and she’s also lived in an unusual setting of religion in her home, as her mother is a Christian while her father converted to Islam sometime back.
At a young age, she grew accustomed to her father’s prolific career, especially in recent years when he has become more active in work.
Her mother aspired to become a chef, but opted to stay at home to raise the family. While Sonal’s career direction has not yet been set, she has done a cameo in one major film, appearing in the Oscar-winning “A Star Is Born” which starred Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The film is also Cooper’s directorial debut, and it helped popularize the song “Shallow” which was a part of the film’s soundtrack.
Father – Dave Chappelle
Dave Chappelle’s parents were educators, working as professors in different universities in the US. Eventually his parents divorced and his father later remarried, so he lived with his mother in Silver Spring, Maryland where she taught.
At a young age, he became interested in a career in comedy, after watching stars such as Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. During summers, he began working as an usher in theatre, and after matriculating from high school he enrolled at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he completed a degree in theatre arts.
In 1990, he made his first television appearance in a small role in “America’s Funniest People”. He then moved to New York City to pursue more comedy appearances, but was initially unsuccessful, getting a poor reception in amateur night performances.
Eventually this motivated him to improve, and he quickly became known on the comedy circuit of New York. In 1992, his popularity increased even more after his appearance in “Def Comedy Jam”, which opened more doors for him in the industry. He then starred in the film “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” in which he portrayed the character Ahchoo.
Chappelle’s Show
In 2003, after multiple failed pilots, Chappelle created a comedy sketch “Chappelle’s Show” which aired on Comedy Central. The show was noted for its parody of various aspects of US culture, often hitting on racial stereotypes, political jokes, and other pop culture references.
The show was highly successful, and many of his characters became famous. He released several comedy specials and was offered a contract by Viacom worth $55 million to continue his show. However, during one of his live stand-up performances, he became increasingly frustrated with people referencing his television characters, a project which to him felt inferior to his stand-up work.
He abruptly left the production, leading to the cancellation of “Chappelle’s Show”. In the meantime, he went on a spiritual journey to South Africa, wanting to take time off from the stress. Leaving the show meant he left the $50 million contract behind.
Following his exit, he laid low for a while, only appearing sporadically in the next eight years. He received a lot of criticisms during his hiatus, which motivated him to stay away even longer, as he wanted to be true to himself. In 2007, he began appearing in stand-up comedy sets once more, though not as frequently.
Career Resurgence – Dave Chappelle
In 2013, Dave returned to performing as a full-time stand-up comedian. The following year, he made his first appearance in a major New York City setting which in turn led him to be invited to numerous popular late-night shows. In 2015 he made his first film appearance in 13 years in “Chi-Raq” alongside Spike Lee.
He then hosted an episode of “Saturday Night Live”, and also made a guest appearance in “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”.
In 2016, Netflix announced that he had signed a new deal with them to create three stand-up comedy specials, and he would be getting paid $20 million per special. His releases won numerous awards, and he then toured with Jon Stewart. In 2019, he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, with numerous actors and comedians attending to see him receive the award. He continues to work with Netflix, with his latest special being “Dave Chappelle; Sticks and Stones”.
Dave’s jokes often walk the borderline of what is acceptable in sensitive topics such as abuse, the LGBT community, and racial equality in the UA. Despite that, all of his comedy albums and specials have won at least one major award each.
Personal Life
Sonal is yet to be of the age that leads her to be interested in romance. She is living life quietly, though at times joins her family, even her father in some of his big events. While her parents share different religious beliefs, they don’t talk about it openly, nor do they entertain these questions in public. It is not known what religion she inclines towards yet, if any.
