Early Life and Career Beginnings
Paul was born in Sydney, though during the early part of his career, many believed he was from Lightning Ridge as he faked his origin to sound more interesting. After growing up in Sydney and completing his education there, his earliest career endeavor was workingont the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a painter.
He aspired for something bigger, and eventually set his sights on an acting career, first appearing in 1971’s edition of “New Faces” an amateur talent program which aired on Australian television through the Nine Network. The show was known for its judges often humiliating or belittling the ability of its performers.
Knowing this, he claimed a fake talent and used the opportunity on stage to turn the jokes onto the judges before making a comedy performance. This resonated strongly with the audience and viewers, and he was invited onto the show several more times. His ability in comedy attracted the attention of Nine Network’s Mike Willesee, who then offered him a regular role in the show “A Current Affair”, in which he would make a joke or humorous comment on some news of the day.
Rise to Prominence
During Hogan’s time in “A Current Affair”, he became close friends with producer John Cornell who would become his manager, and the two would also later become partners in business.
Following his work there, he then started the comedy sketch “The Paul Hogan Show” on which he was responsible for most of the writing. The show debuted in 1973 and ran for 11 years, becoming popular in Australia, the UK and South Africa.
Also in the ‘70s he became known for his advertisements promoting Winfield cigarettes, in which he was often seen wearing a formal suit. He also made frequent appearance in tourism ads of Australia, which aired in the US. His next project was in 1985, in the miniseries “Anzacs” in which he played the character Pat Cleary, set in World War I and following the story of men who became a part of the First Australian Imperial Force.
The film was noted for featuring many high profile actors such as Jon Blake, Megan Williams, Andrew Clarke and Bill Kerr.
Crocodile Dundee
In 1986, Paul achieved international acclaim when he was cast in “Crocodile Dundee”, a film which he also co-wrote. The film follows the titular character who lives in the Australian Outback. It was an effort to produce something that would appeal to the US but turned out to be a phenomenon worldwide. It became the highest-grossing film of all time in Australia, and the second highest-grossing of the year in the US. His work led him to get nominations for multiple awards, and he even co-hosted the 59th Academy Awards.
He later reprised his role in “Crocodile Dundee II” which continued its success at the box office, though it wasn’t quite as successful as the original. He was offered numerous roles in action films in the US, but he declined many of them due to their violent nature. He was very selective in his roles in the 1990s, working on “Flipper”, “Lightning Jack”, Almost an Angel”, and later reprised his famous role in “Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles”. In recent years, he’s been touring around Australia doing stand-up performances – biographical films, miniseries, and documentaries have also been made about his life.
Former Wife – Linda Kozlowski
Linda began her career in 1981, appearing in several stage productions in the US, mostly on Broadway such as in “Death of a Salesman”, later appearing in the film adaptation of that play in 1985. While she was relatively unknown, her popularity grew significantly when she became the leading lady in Hogan’s “Crocodile Dundee”, as their on-screen relationship eventually became a real one. Her performance in the film was also lauded, and she reprised her role in the two sequels. In 200, she left acting, admitting her disappointment with many of the roles being offered to her.
She was given film roles that felt like straight-to-video films to her, and that was leaving her dissatisfied. She was also intent on starting a family, and so decided to retire.
Personal Life
Paul’s first wife was Noelene Edwards whom he married in 1958. They stayed together for 23 years, and then divorced but reconciled, leading to a remarriage one year later. In 1990 they divorced again, and the proceedings were covered by the media as it was considered a very ugly affair, and involved his co-star “Crocodile Dundee” Linda Kozlowski, whom he married in 1990. They stayed together until a divorce in 2014, and he has been single since. He has five children with Noelene, and one with Kozlowski.
There was one big issue that affected Hogan and it was tax evasion. In 2007, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) began investigating him but charges were eventually dropped. However, the case later resumed as the ATO took notice of a possible tax fraud operation held by various Australian companies to hide their money offshore. This led to a long and expensive battle, but he won five million Australian Dollars (AUD) in 2008. The government didn’t give up on the case however, as in 2010, the tax office claimed that he owed 37.5 million AUD. Eventually, charges were dropped but Hogan responded to the cases by filing one against the government, suing them for damaging his reputation. The case was settled confidentially, and in 2013, he then had a long legal battle in the US against Strachans as he claimed that a bank they owned had gotten away with a huge amount of money he had saved there. He was unsuccessful in the claim, and was unable to access his money.
