She went to Bowie High School located in her home town, and even during her teenage days, she enjoyed acting, and was a part of many drama activities. She was even featured in a one-act school play named “Wit”, which earned her several local acting awards, so it wasn’t a surprise when she enrolled at the Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of Arts in University Park, Texas, and chose acting as her field of study. In 2005 she earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Acting.
Career
After graduation Featherston moved to Los Angeles, California US, to pursue her acting career. She made her acting debut in 2006 when she performed in the short horror film, “Mutation”, with co-stars John-Damon Charles and Eddie Croft, but the film wasn’t well received by the critics.
However, she had more luck with her second film, as she was cast as the star of the horror movie “Paranormal Activity”, which was filmed in 2007 but had its US theatrical release in 2009.
Her portrayal of the lead character of the same name, Katie, who was haunted by a demon named Toby, brought her worldwide fame, and made her one of the best-known faces from the horror movies, especially as this endeavor earned her the Best Actress Award at the Screamfest Film Festival in 2009. She reprised the role in the “Paranormal Activity 2”, which aired three years later, and that same year she also made an appearance in the sci-fi horror film “Psychic Experiment”, portraying Elspeth Thompson, and was a guest in an episode from the ninth season of “Jimmy Kimmel Live”.
In 2011, she was in a prequel of “Paranormal Activity”, called simply “Paranormal Activity 3”. The following year, she had a brief role in the BBC series “The River”, in which she portrayed Rosetta ‘Rabbit’ Fischer, then once again played Katie, this time in “Paranormal Activity 4”.
In 2013, Featherston co-starred in the first season of the TV series “Act-Anon”, which showed the lives of several young people with their own, everyday problems. She was also a part of “The Newest Testament” cast, a short comedy about the newest return of Jesus Christ on Earth.
Featherston made her final appearance in the “Paranormal” saga in 2014, when she once again portrayed Katie in “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones”, although this time only as a guest.
In 2016 she made her directing debut, when she and David DeGrow Shotwell directed the short drama film “Becoming”, starring Kimberly Condict. A year later she starred in “Solace for the Unloved”, a gloomy TV series about a heartbroken woman, which she also directed, however, the show was canceled after one season.
In 2017 she appeared in the short comedy skit “MasterClass: Trolling the President”, together with Luke Barnett and Chris Mann. In 2019, she was in another short film, “The Lonely Host”, and made an appearance in the crime TV series, “Big Little Lies”, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley.
During her career, Katie’s appeared as a guest in several TV shows, such as “The Totally Rad Show”, “The Jay Leno Show”, “TMI Hollywood” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show”.
Personal Life
Featherston keeps her personal life private and away from paparazzi’s eyes.
She hasn’t been romantically connected with anyone, never disclosing any relationship. However, in 2016 she was photographed with a gold ring on her ring finger, which started rumors that she is married. Featherston never commented on the rumors, but frequently posts pictures of a young boy on her social media – which is supposed by many to be her son.
Featherstone is active on social media platforms, most notably on Instagram, on which she has more than 14,500 followers.
She is an avid horror movie fan – one of her favorite horror films is “Candyman” from 1992.
She owns a dog called Harvey.
Net Worth
Featherston has earned a fine amount from her career in horror movies, despite not acting in too many titles. “Paranormal Activity” had a budget of around $15,000, but earned close to $200 million at the US box office alone, which makes it one of the most profitable movies of all time. Its sequel, “Paranormal Activity 2”, made $177.5 million, while the second sequel was the most successful, earning over $207 million! This is partly why Featherstone’s net worth is estimated at around $500,000.
Physical characteristics
Featherston is considered to be a beautiful woman by many, with strikingly blue eyes and brown hair. She is 5ft 6ins (1.67m) tall, and weighs around 148lbs (67kg).
