Early Life and Career Beginnings
At a young age, Haechan loved dancing and listening to music, often dancing and singing in his free time, performing in front of his family. He also took piano lessons, and eventually during his teens, he discovered popular K-pop music, enjoying the songs of SHINee in particular. He is the eldest of three children, and with their mother noticing his interest, she encouraged him to pursue a potential career in entertainment.
He appeared at an audition held by SM Entertainment, one of the largest entertainment companies in South Korea; he was successful, and was signed to become one of their trainees.
He had to move back to Seoul as a result, as the family had already been residing in Jeju for some time. For the next few years, he was mainly under the radar, training to hopefully be selected for one of the future projects of SM. He appeared briefly as a part of SM Rookies, which showcased many future talents of the company. Back then, he still had the name Lee Dong-hyuk, though later he was named Haechan by Lee Soo-man, which means Full Sun.
Joining NCT
Soo-man would also be responsible for recruiting Haechan into the next project – in 2016 it was announced that a new boy group was going to be created by SM.
This group would become NCT (Neo Culture Technology) and it marked the first new group from the company since the debut of Red Velvet two years prior, and was their first boy band since Exo in 2012. The band’s concept was having an unlimited number of members, who are a part of various sub-units that concentrate on different parts of the world. Eventually, things were settled in 2019 as 21 members have become more consistent, and are of varying age groups.
He was a part of the second unit of NCT called NCT 127, named after the longitude co-ordinates of Seoul, with seven members of the group including Mark, Winwin, Yuta, Jaehyun, Taeyong, and Taeil.
Following their introduction, they released a debut extended play (EP) NCT #127 and began regularly performing on television shows. He was also selected to become a part of NCT’s third group NCT Dream, also consisting of Jaemin, Jisung, Chenie, Renjun, Jeno, and Mark.
Success with NCT
With the introduction of new members, NCT 127 began releasing music in 2017, leading to the creation of “Limitless” along with their second EP of the same name. The EP was successful, reaching the top of the Billboard World Albums Chart, and was later named as one of the best K-pop songs of the year.
Afterwards he turned his attention to NCT Dream, as they returned to performing on stage and releasing music, leading them to be selected for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup for which they created the theme song “Trigger the Fever”.
Later in 2017, NCT 127 released their third EP – “Cherry Bomb” – and its title track was named one of the best songs of the year. Following on, he then released the first EP of NCT Dream “We Young”, which was debuted through “M Countdown”. In 2018, it was announced that all members of NCT then would become a part of a project called NCT 2018, which would consist of all members, and led to the group’s first full-length album as a whole, called “NCT 2018 Empathy”.
The project reached the top of the Billboard Emerging Artists chart, making them the first K-pop act to do so.
Recent Projects
Haechan’s work with both Dream and 127 continued, as he released the EP “We Go Up” with Dream, while working on 127’s first full-length album “Regular-Irregular”. 127 added more members, and NCT continued to expand with two new subgroups. In 2019, NCT 127 embarked on their first tour, leading to the release of a fourth EP “We Are Superhuman”. Dream on the other hand worked on the EP “We Boom”, and also collaborated with HRVY for the single “Take Off”.

In 2020, NCT 127 released singles to promote their second studio album – “Neo Zone” – which was released a few months later. A repackaged version of it was also released called “Neo Zone: The Final Round”.
He then worked with NCT Dream for their fourth EP “Reload”, with him along with the other member promoting its release. During this time, with some of the members nearing graduation, NCT took back its concept of members leaving and graduating, opting instead to stick with its current line-ups. One of his recent projects is being a part of live online concerts set to entertain while most of the world is still in quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, including South Korea.
Personal Life
Haechan is single – relationships aren’t very common within the Korean entertainment industry due to their busy schedules, but if he has a relationship in the future, it would probably be with a girl who has a good vocal ability. During his free time, he enjoys playing football and dancing. He is also considered the mood maker and the cleanest among the group. He has Christian beliefs, and after NCT he hopes to make the transition to a solo singer and songwriter. He also loves video games, and often plays “Overwatch” with some of his bandmates.
