Nonetheless, there is still plenty to discuss concerning her life, and if you are interested in finding out more about Jim Carrey’s first wife and mother to his lovely daughter, Jane Erin Carrey, then read on.
A Troubled Childhood
While no information regarding Melissa’s childhood, family, and siblings has been made public, she has said that she was raised in a dysfunctional family. Exactly what that means or how dysfunctional her family was remains a mystery.
However, from her reluctance to share early life stories, it can be assumed that her childhood was not all that colorful.
Melissa Jaine Womer was born on 8 July 1960 in New York City, New York, USA, where it is known she had spent most of her younger life. With a troubled childhood behind her, Melissa traveled to Kansas to attend varsity, and it was while studying at the University of Kansas in Kansas City that she discovered her interest and talent for comedy.
Odd as it might be, it seems to be a common occurrence for people with a troubled past to have a natural aptitude for comic relief. Melissa’s primary and high school education remains unknown, but it is common knowledge that she graduated from university.
Her Difficult Rise To Fame
At varsity, Melissa also worked in odd jobs to get by, which included writing jokes to a radio morning show for a broadcasting agency in Kansas City.
After graduation, Melissa moved to Hollywood, Los Angeles, where she inte, nded to pursue fame and fortune as an actress.
Her beginnings were filled with struggles and difficulties and to get by she had to accept a job as a cocktail waitress at a comedy store on Sunset Boulevard. It also happened to be the place where she would meet her future husband, Jim Carrey, who like her, at that time was been a struggling actor.
This was during the late nineteen-eighties, before Jim Carrey’s rubber face expressions would afford him fame on the comedy sketch show ‘In Living Color’.

While working at the comedy store, Melissa was granted the opportunity to show her talent as a stand-up comedian during an open mic night, and soon became a favorite with patrons.
Though it took her some time, Melissa’s hard work was rewarded when she landed her first role in a film, in the biographical film ‘Man on the Moon’, which starred Jim Carrey in the leading role. By the time the film was released in 1999, the couple had already divorced.
Melissa portrayed a small role, ironically as a comedy store waitress. Following her failure to gain true success as an actress, Melissa began devoting her attention to film production instead.
She has been closely involved in several productions, which include ‘The Real Stories of The Donut Men’ – a mockumentary that is a spoof spin-off of the reality TV-show ‘Cops’ – and ‘The Yesterday Show With John Kirman’. Melissa’s career has been mostly lowkey, and never afforded her the same attention as her now ex-husband has enjoyed.
Relationship and Marriage to Jim Carrey
Melissa met Jim while she worked as a waitress on Sunset Boulevard. Their romance lasted for a year before the couple decided to tie the knot in 1987, on 28 March at the Santa Monica Hotel in California. Melissa had been the oldest in the relationship, being two years older than Jim.
On 6 September 1987, Melissa gave birth to their daughter Jane Erin Carrey, and their relationship seemed to hold strong for some time, and had been married for eight years when on 11 December their divorce was finalized.
Their relationship troubles began after Jim’s fame grew, and he became too busy to be the family man Melissa wanted, which led to their eventual separation.
During the divorce, Melissa attempted to seek $5 million, but in the end settled on $3.5 million. In the years that would follow, Melissa was awarded another $7 million for Jane Erin’s welfare. It is not known if Melissa has married again, but Jim did not waste a lot of time before tying the knot again.
Only a year after his separation with Melissa, he married Lauren Holly. In media speculations, it was thought that Jim divorced Melissa because he was having an affair with Lauren, though Melissa denied this by saying that it was their busy schedules that saw them grow apart. Despite the divorce, it is believed that Jane Erin has had a wonderful life, and became an actress and singer. She is also married to Alex Santana and had a child with him. Melissa is the proud grandmother of Jackson Santana.
