Who is Firdous Bamji?

Firdous Bamji was born in Bombay, India, on 3 May 1966 – his zodiac sign is Taurus and he holds both Indian and American nationality. He is an actor and a writer, perhaps best known for his role in the American supernatural psychological thriller movie “The Sixth Sense” in 1999, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and which starred Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment and Tonie Collete. The story follows a boy who can talk with spirits, and was a huge success, as it won 36 awards and was nominated for 56 others, including six Oscars.

Early life and education

Firdous was raised alongside his two brothers in Bahrain by their mother Roshan who was a housewife, and their father Esadvaster who was the regional representative of the Norwich Union Life Insurance Society – both their parents were interested in doing charity work, and helped gather a lot of money for underprivileged children, and children with disabilities.

Firdous studied at St. Christopher’s School, Bahrain before he was moved to the American Kodaikanal International Boarding School located in the South Indian mountains.

Upon matriculation in 1984, Firdous enrolled at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, before moving to the University of South Carolina, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1988. He continued working on his education, and obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in journalism in 1990.

While still attending college, Firdous became more interested in rock music, and was the lead singer of a rock band he founded.

Career as an actor

Firdous launched his acting career before enrolling at college, appearing in several plays such as “Burn This”, “Beirut” and “Danny, and the Deep Blue Sea” in which he portrayed the lead character Danny.

He eventually decided to move to Washington D. C. to take acting lessons at The Shakespeare Theatre, and his breakthrough role came in 1994 when he was chosen to appear in the play “SubUrbia” performed at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theater – as it was performed in New York City, Firdous sold his car to move there. He went on to appear and star in many plays before making his debut TV series appearance, as Dr. Spears in the episode “New York News” of the eponymous drama series in 1995, which starred Mary Tyler Moore, Gregory Harrison and Madeline Kahn, and is about the people working for a New York City newspaper.

A year later, Firdous was invited to portray the supporting character E.R. Doctor in the drama movie “Firehouse”, but which failed to attract much attention.

The year 2000 saw him guest star as Daoud Tarzi in the episode “Honor” of the crime mystery series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, and he also had a small role in the mystery science fiction film “Unbreakable”. In 2002, he was Dr. Kassam in the comedy crime movie “Analyze That”, which starred some big names such as Robert De Niro, Lisa Kudrow and Billy Crystal, but the movie was a failure, and only won a Stinker Award for Worst Sequel.

A few of Firdous’ following roles were in the comedy movie “Justice” in 2003, directed and written by Evan Oppenheime’, appeared in two episodes of the series “Law & Order” in 2004, and then starred as Sayeed Choudhury in the drama movie “The War Within” in 2005.

In 2010, Firdous starred as Pinky in the crime movie “Ashes” alongside Heather Burns and Maurice Carr, and some of his most recent roles have been in the movie “National Theatre Live: A Disappearing Number” in 2010, the episode “Do the Right Thing” of the thriller series “Berlin Station” in 2017 and the episode “The Friendship Game” of the drama series “Madam Secretary” in 2018.

Firdous prefers to keep his personal matters to himself, but it’s known that he was once married to his other half Erin Thigpen. The two married in the US and were together for several years before splitting ways for unknown reasons – it is believed by many that Erin was jealous of Firdous and his career, which eventually led to their divorce.

Today, Firdous is in a relationship with his partner Hayley Catherine Rose Vivien Mills who was born in Marylebone, London, England on 18 April 1946 and who is an actress perhaps best known for her portrayal of the lead character in the crime movie “Tiger Bay” (for her performance in the movie, she was awarded a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer).

She is the daughter of iconic English actor (Sir) John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell. Hayley was previously married to the movie director Roy Boulting from 1971 to 1977 and gave birth to their boy Crispian Mills – she also has a son from her relationship with British actor Leigh Lawson.

Hayley and Firdous have been together since 1997.

Hobbies and other interests

Firdous is keen on learning languages, and can speak four fluently while he can understand several more, but doesn’t speak them well.

Since his teenage years his main hobby has been travelling, and he has been all around the US visiting nearly every state, and he has also been to many European and Asian countries, including Switzerland and Austria (Europe) and Japan (Asia).

Motivated by his parents, Firdous became interested in doing charity work and attending charity events and he has donated money to several charity organizations focused on working with veterans and underprivileged children.
