  • Steffi played her first professional tournament in October 1982 at Filderstadt, Germany where she lost her first-round match 6–4, 6–0 to Tracy Austin. 
  • She secured the World’s 124th position in her first year. Her ranking steadily rose to World No. 98, No. 22, and No. 6 in 1983, 1984, and 1985. 
  • She then came to fame after she upset the tenth seed, Jo Durie in 1984. 
  • She won the tennis demonstration event at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles when she was 15. 
  • She emerged as the top challenger to Martina Navratilova’s and Chris Evert’s dominance in 1985 and 1986. She lost six times to Evert and three times to Navratilova, all in straight sets.
