- On 27 March 2020, his family confirmed that he had awoken from his coma, returned home to his family, and that they were caring for him.
- Shortly afterward, Ajax announced they had canceled his contract, which was due to automatically renew on 1 July, and that they were in talks with his family about a “future solution” for him.
- On 21 February 2022, Ajax announce that they have come to an agreement with his family that they will pay his family €7.8M due to the inadequate treatment he had received after his collapse on the pitch and they also have told the family that number 34 will get retired forever.
