Kevin Scott Richardson was born on October 3, 1971, in Lexington, Kentucky, the youngest of three siblings born to parents Jerald Wayne Richardson, Sr. and his wife Ann C. (nee Littrell); his mother is Brian Littrell’s mother.
He spent his first nine years of life on a 10-acre farm before he moved to Cathedral Domain Camp, which is a church-owned youth camp operated by his father. He was the camp counselor, and participated in the camp talent show for the next nine years. It was there that he met Keith McGuffey, now best known as Trey D, a singer and composer.
Growing up he was an outdoor kid, riding horses at the young age of four. Also, he would ride dirt bikes, captaining the bike team Estill Engineers. Another love was music, and when he was nine years old he started playing piano by ear, though even before that, he was a member of the church’s choir.
Gradually he was improving, and joined the wedding band Paradise. He displayed an interest in other performing arts and joined the drama club in high school. In addition, Kevin entered several talent shows, and performed in school plays, including “Bye Bye Birdie”, among others. He matriculated from Estill County High School.
Career Beginnings
Before he joined the Backstreet Boys, Kevin struggled to get his career going. He was dwelling on a decision between joined the US Air Force in order to join the Air Force band, and a chance to attend the New York American Music and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan. After a talk with his father, Kevin flew to Orlando, Florida with his best friend Jimmy, and started his career as a model and musician.
Gradually, he started earning from his other talents, including writing music, performing live at dinner clubs, as a dance instructor, and as an extra in films.
After a while, he joined Walt Disney World, where he played various characters, including Aladdin, Prince Eric, one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tigger, and Sebastian the Crab in the Little Mermaid show. As his was career was developing he had more opportunities to prove himself, and appeared in musicals, but was then forced to return home as his father’s health worsened.
Diagnosed with colon cancer, his father died in August 1991, and Kevin spent another year in Kentucky before returning to Orlando, this time with his mother’s encouragement.
There he got a part in a musical, and then in 1993 he learned about the Backstreet Boys audition, and after his first appearance was brought into the group. Soon after, his half-brother Brian was invited to join the group, and Backstreet Boys were ready to storm the world.

In his first stint, Kevin was in the band until 2006, during which time he worked on the band’s five albums. They began performing in 1993, and in 1994 they started recording their first song, which was done in January 1995 with the help of Max Martin and Denniz PoP.
Although the song was only a minor success in the US, it became a hit in Europe and they went on a summer tour there. Their debut self-titled album came out in 1996, and topped the charts in Australia, Austria and Switzerland, and achieved platinum status in countries around the world with 10 million copies sold worldwide.
They continued to improve with their following albums, “Backstreet’s Back” (1997), “Millennium” (1999) – their most successful album, topping charts in several countries, including USA, UK, Austria, Canada, and others – then “Black & Blue” (2000), and “Never Gone” (2005). For the next two albums Kevin was out of the band, but returned in 2012 for the album “In a World Like This”, released in 2013.
Their most recent release is the 2019 album “DNA”, which became their third album to top the Billboard 200 chart.
Other Projects
In addition to music, Kevin has also made a name as an actor and model; in his career, he has collaborated with Versace, and modeled for Vogue, while he has been serving as a brand ambassador for TAG Heuer.
He is known for his performance in the play “Chicago” as Billy Flynn; the particular play has become very popular, and after the Broadway production, he toured with the play in 2003 throughout the US, and returned in 2006 and with the rest of the cast to perform in Japan and Canada.

He has also featured on screen in such projects as the television movie “Love Takes Wing” (2009), and in 2011 he starred in the drama film “The Casserole Club”. Three years later, he starred in the horror-comedy musical “The Bloody Indulgent”, and the sequel “Vampire Burt’s Serenade” is scheduled for release later in 2020.
