Childhood and education

Nia was raised alongside her two sisters in Los Angeles, by their father who was a comedy manager and their mother who was working at a local market. However, the two soon divorced and the girls started living with their father, who later married a woman who had two sons, thus Nia and her sisters have two stepbrothers.

Nia was motivated by her father to pursue a career as an actress and a stand-up comedian. She studied at Greenville County High School where she was a member of the school’s drama club, and after matriculation in 1987, she enrolled at Emerson College, Boston graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in media arts in 1991. Nia worked several jobs while trying to find work in the film industry – it took her 10 years to do so.
