Early life and education

Ana was raised in New York City by her father, Angel Ortiz, who is a politician born in Puerto Rico, best known for being the first Latino man to join Philadelphia’s City Council, and her mother Kathleen Kulhman who is a housewife. Ana has a sister, Lydia Pilar Ortiz and a brother Angel Omar Ortiz. She became interested in dancing at a very early age, and her parents enrolled her at a ballet school where she trained for the next eight years.

After ballet became too harsh on her feet and the pain unbearable, Ana decided to focus on something else and chose acting and singing. She enrolled at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and after matriculation at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 1993.
