Anita Pointer was an American singersongwriter. She was best known for being the founding member of the vocal group “the Pointer Sisters“. She first worked as a secretary but later, she quit her job in 1969 to join her younger sisters Bonnie and June to form “The Pointer Sisters”. The group then released “Yes We Can Can”, “Wang Dang Doodle”, “Fairytale”, “Love for What It Is”, and more. In 2015, Pointer retired from The Pointer Sisters due to her ill health. Anita Pointer, from the Grammy-winning Pointer Sisters, has died aged 74, her publicist has announced. Anita Pointer passed away on 31st December 2022 at her home in Los Angeles, USA. She died surrounded by her family at her Beverley Hills home in California. Her family said they were deeply saddened by her passing. “Heaven is a more loving beautiful place with Anita there,” they said in a statement. Her death cause was cancer

In October 2021, she was supposed to be a contestant on season 6 of The Masked Singer, as part of a duet with her sister Ruth, who revealed that Pointer had not performed because she was dealing with an illness.

Anita Pointer was born on January 23, 1948, in Oakland, California, U.S. Her born name was Anita Marie Pointer. She was born as the fourth of six children to her mother, Sarah Elizabeth (née Silas; 1924–2000), and her father, Reverend Elton Pointer (1901–1979). Though she was born in California, her parents were natives of Arkansas. Her family traveled by car almost yearly from California to Arkansas to visit Pointer’s grandparents who lived in Prescott. She had five siblings – Ruth, June, Bonnie, Fritz, and Aaron. Aaron Pointer was an MLB player and later NFL referee. Her sister June died in 2006 due to cancer. Her cousin, Paul Silas, was an NBA player and head coach. 

Anita attended fifth grade at McRae Elementary, seventh grade at McRae Jr. High, and tenth grade at McRae High School. While in Prescott, she played alto sax as a member of the McRae High School band. In 1969, she quit her job as a secretary to join her younger sisters Bonnie and June to form “The Pointer Sisters”.

  • Anita along with her sisters rose to fame in 1973 with the song “Yes We Can Can”. After a year, ‘The Pointer Sisters’ gained further recognition with the song “Fairytale”. The song became a hit on the country music charts and enabled the group to become the first black female group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. 
  • “Fairytale” won the group its first Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group, and a Grammy Nomination for Best Country Song of the year in 1975.
  • The Pointer Sisters rose to higher levels of success during the 1970s to 1980s with the songs “Fire” (1978), “He’s So Shy” (1980), “Slow Hand” (1981), and “I’m So Excited” (1982). 
  • The trio’s album “Break Out” in 1983 reached multi-platinum status and won the group two more Grammy Awards. 
  • The group next found chart success with country superstar Earl Thomas Conley on the song “Too Many Times”, which reached no. 2 on the country chart in 1986. 
  • After a year, she released her first solo album “Love for What It Is” and the album’s first single “Overnight Success” reached no. 41 on the Billboard R&B chart. “More Than a Memory” was the second single of the album. 
  • In 1994, Pointer and her sisters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1998, Pointer was singularly inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. 
  • Anita then retired from The Pointer Sisters due to her ill health in 2015.
