Who is Anne-Marie Johnson?
Anne-Marie Johnson is an American actress and impressionist, who is perhaps still best known to the world for her role of Nadine Hudson Thomas in the TV comedy series “What’s Happening Now!!” (1985-1988), and also as Althea Tibbs in the TV series “In the Heat of the Night” (1988-1993), among other projects on which she has worked during her five decades-long career.

Anne-Marie Johnson was born on the 18th of July 1960, in Los Angeles, California USA, of African-American ancestry from her father’s side, while of mixed ethnicity from her mother’s side. Her father’s name is Joseph P. but she hasn’t shared details about her mother.

She went to John Marshall High School from which she matriculated in the mid- ‘70s, and then enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated with a degree in theater and acting in 1978. She even furthered her studies and obtained a master’s degree from UCLA four years later.
Started as a Child
Anne-Marie’s career started when she was 11 years old, when in 1971 she appeared in the TV crime-drama series “Homicide”. Two years later, Anne-Marie secured her next appearance, as Susan Marshall in another crime-drama series “Division 4”. She continued with minor roles throughout the ‘70s, and then in 1986 she co-starred in the television comedy movie “High School USA”.
Becoming a Star
It was in 1985 that she was selected for one of the most popular roles in her career, as Nadine Hudson Thomas in the TV comedy series “What’s Happening Now!”. The show became quite popular, which launched young Anne-Marie to stardom. After the show ended, she secured yet another long-term role, this time in the crime-drama series “In the Heat of the Night” (1988-1993). Although the show won several awards and earned seven Golden Globe Award nominations, Anne-Marie was left without a single nomination. Nevertheless, the role of Althea Tibbs, a character she portrayed in the show, has certainly contributed further to her popularity, and net worth as well.
Anne-Marie continued with television roles in the ‘90s, featuring in such projects as “In Living Color” (1993-1994), and then playing Alycia Barnett in the TV series “Melrose Place” (1995-1996). She guest-starred in the TV series “ER”, while in 1997 she appeared in the sci-fi thriller television movie “Asteroid”.

Before the ‘90s ended, Anne-Marie secured the recurring role of Rep. Bobbi Latham in the crime-drama series “JAG”, and in five years she appeared in 18 episodes of the Primetime Emmy Award-winning series. Nothing changed for Anne-Marie with the start of the new millennium, as she continued with television roles, and she waited until 2003 for the role of Sharon Upton Farley in the TV series “Girlfriends”, joining the popular cast that won numerous awards.
In 2007, she started portraying Liz Shelton in Tyler Perry’s comedy-drama series “House of Payne” (2007-2010). She then made a couple of appearances in films, such as “Suicide Dolls” (2010) and “About Fifty” (2011), among others, but didn’t make a significant appearance until 2016 when she portrayed Doctor Adams in the TV series “NCIS: Los Angeles”.

Anne-Marie struggled for a brief time to secure a prominent role, but then in 2018 she was selected to play Gail in the TV series “Imposters”, which re-kick-started her career. The same year, she made a number of other popular appearances, including as Senator Fox in the TV series “For The People”, and as Suzanne in the television movie “I Was a Teenage Pillow Queen”.
The following year, she co-starred in the drama film “Adopt a Highway”, starring Ethan Hawke, and also portrayed Lt. Swanstrom in the TV sci-fi drama series “The In-Between”, before it was canceled after one season.
Most recently, Anne-Marie played Dana in the TV romantic-drama series “Cherish the Day” (2020), and also Kendra Strauss in two episodes of the Golden Globe Award-nominated mystery crime-drama series “How to Get Away with Murder” (2020), further increasing her popularity and wealth.

In 2005, Anne-Marie became the First National Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild, and served in the position until 2010 when she was succeeded by Ned Vaughn. Also, in 2009 she ran for the actors’ union in 2009 on the Membership First ticket. However, the union elected Ken Howard.
In 2016, Anne-Marie was presented with the Ralph Morgan Award, given by the Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, for her contribution to the union as one of the board members.
