Three plainclothes LMPD officers, Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove, were looking for Jamarcus Glover and Adrian Walker, suspects of selling controlled substances from a drug house. Taylor’s apartment was to search for the suspects. Glover had previously dated Taylor for two years. During the search warrant, the officers forcibly entered Taylor’s apartment without announcing themselves as police officers. Breonna’s boyfriend, Walker believed that the intruders broke in the apartment and he fired from his licensed gun. The police stated that they announced themselves while entering the apartment and knocked several times. However, neighbors and Taylor’s family disputes that there was no announcement made by the officers. Walker’s shot injured one of the officers. The police officers responded with a return-fire. The cops fired over 20 rounds and Taylor was shot 8 times during the incident. Breonna Taylor died from a gunshot injury.
Following the death of Breonna Taylor, protests for the three officers be arrested and charged with murder started in Lousiville. The police initially filed an incident report that claimed that Taylor had no injuries and that no forced entry occurred. Taylor’s boyfriend, Walker was initially charged with first-degree assault and attempted murder of a police officer. The police office officers stated that they announced before forcefully entering the apartment. However, Taylor’s family and neighbors disputed that the police did not make an announcement. Walker was heard in a 911 call voice record saying “somebody kicked in the door and shot my girlfriend”. Walker was released from jail due to COVID-19 concerns. Walker’s attorney Rob Eggert filed a motion to permanently dismiss the charges against Walker.
