Case Keenum to start at QB for Cleveland Browns on Thursday VS Broncos

Cleveland Browns quarterback Case Keenum will get the start Thursday against the Denver Broncos. Due to Baker Mayfield’s torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, Mayfield would not play against the Broncos. “Baker fought really hard to play, he’s a competitor and obviously wants to be out there but just couldn’t make it on a short week,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. “We know he will continue to do everything in his power to return as quickly as possible”. The injury halts Mayfield’s streak of 53 consecutive starts at quarterback for the Browns and gives backup Case Keenum his first NFL start in almost three years. The 33-year-old Keenum’s last start in an NFL game came on Dec. 29, 2019, with the Washington Football team, in a 47-16 loss to Dallas. free agent out of the University of Houston in 2012, Keenum has spent the last 10 years mostly as a backup for six NFL teams. He’s in the second year of a three-year $18 million contract with Cleveland, where he now faces the challenge of trying to help salvage the season of an underachieving, injury-riddled 3-3 Browns team that was projected to be a Super Bowl contender. “I’m built for this,” Keenum said. “This is what I’ve done my whole career – from not knowing if I’m going to start, up until the game time, to not knowing who’s out there with me, to introducing-myself-to-players-while-I’m-calling-a-play type stuff”. “I’m excited,” he said. “What better chance to take advantage of an opportunity than on Thursday Night Football? These opportunities don’t come around very often.”
