While she mainly had a background role in most of the film and television projects she’s worked on, she’s probably benefitted from the success of her husband, who has a net worth estimated to be over $7 million. She reportedly gained a significant amount of wealth from their divorce settlement, which includes spousal support.
Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
At a young age, Cynthia developed a love for the performing arts and wanted to pursue a career in entertainment. After matriculating from high school, she decided to take her path towards acting seriously, enrolling at the University of Oregon to take up a degree in theatre.
She completed her degree from the historical institution and then furthered her studies at the University of California, for a master’s degree in acting. Its university system is one of the most comprehensive in the world, which has a combined student body of around 300,000. Schools in the University of California system are among the most popular and most applied-to in the US. After completing her master’s, she gained her first professional acting job in 1996, appearing in “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier”, working alongside William Shatner.
Voice Dialect Work and Continued Acting
During the same year, she discovered that she was a very capable teacher, especially when it came to voice control, dialect, and the many intricacies of improving voice modulation for actors. She began working as a dialect coach, and was invited to productions as a consultant or a staff member. One of her first films in which she worked as a dialect coach was “The Spitfire Grill” though she wasn’t given credit for her work. She continued working as a coach, and was eventually recognised in 1998, when she worked on the comedy film “Polish Wedding”.
In 2000 she returned to acting in the film “Timequest”, in which she also served as a dialect coach. The film had her work with Victor Slezak and had a time-traveling theme. She stayed away from the spotlight after her work there, preferring to work in the background while also supporting her husband. She was the voice coach for the film “The Affair of the Necklace” working personally with Hilary Swank. She also worked on the film “8 Mile” which starred Eminem, and her efforts contributed to the film winning an Academy Award.
Later Projects
Over the next few years, she worked with high profile actors such as Penelope Cruz, Elizabeth Banks, Salma Hayek and Chris North.
Some of her film credits include “Sea of Dreams”, “Miami Vice”, “Bandidas”, and “Bad Apple”. She also had consistent television work, becoming a part of the crew for the series “Justice”, but which was short-lived. She also worked for the show “Eli Stone” temporarily, and helped Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the film “Six Souls”. She also worked with Dwayne Johnson for his film “Faster”.
2012 marked her return to a screen role when she joined her husband in his work in “Key and Peele”. She became a recurring presence in the show, often appearing during comedy skits and other segments involving the titular comedic duo. Afterwards she worked on the television movie “Beautiful and Twisted”, and the drama “The Tiger Hunter”.
A few of her latest projects involve voice acting work, as seen in her contributions to the comedy sketch show “Robot Chicken”, which airs on Adult Swim and incorporates stop motion, and has been highly successful. During its run, it won six Emmy Awards and has featured various celebrities in its skits, including Seth Green, Conan O’Brien, Seth McFarlane and Mark Hamill.
Ex-Husband – Keegan-Michael Key
After completing a master’s degree in theatre, Keegan-Michael found his first opportunity during the ninth season of “Mad TV”, for which he auditioned against Jordan Peele. However, the producers discovered that the duo had great chemistry together, leading to both of them being cast. A lifelong friendship would be created, and the two were responsible for various comedy sketch segments that helped elevate their fame as performers.
After both of them left “Mad TV”, they started their own program “Key & Peele” which ran for five seasons. The show was noted for its hilarious sketches that often involved the duo performing comedic stereotypes that showcased their ability in comedy, and versatility in acting. They ended the show after three years to pursue other projects, with Peele developing an interest in scriptwriting for horror films. Keegan, on the other hand, began appearing in various films and shows – some of his projects in the last few years include “The Lion King”, “Toy Story 4”, “Horrible Bosses 2” and “Playing House”. He is also the host of the National Geographic show called “Brain Games”.
Personal Life
Cynthia and Keegan met each other while working on theatrical projects. After a few years of dating, they married in 1998 and stayed together for nearly two decades, but apparently grew increasingly tense after she began working with him in the “Key & Peele” show. They separated in 2015, and Keegan filed for divorce but the proceedings took a long time before things were settled. As a part of the settlement, she was paid over $600,000 while she also gains a percentage of his earnings. She also got one of their vacation homes in Mexico and a Subaru vehicle with the settlement.
Since then, she has quietly returned to work, while her former husband has moved on. He began dating producer Elisa Pugliese, and they married in 2018.
