The American Idol contestant was born on 24 April 1980 as Daniel Jay Gokey. He is the fifth child of six children to his parents born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. He has not provided information on his parents publically. Further, he has five siblings: a brother, Charles, and four sisters: Angela, Janell, Gina, and Tracey. 

Regarding his education, he attended Heritage Christian Schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. No information on his further studies.
