Dom Phillips was a British journalist. He lived in Brazil for more than a decade and had been a long-time contributor to the Guardian newspaper. He had freelanced for the Washington Post, The New York Times, and Financial Times as well.
Phillips and indigenous peoples expert Bruno Pereira disappeared in a remote part of the Amazon rainforest in June 2022. After the investigation, two suspects were arrested who took the investigators to a site where human remains were dug up. A 10-day search concluded after the remains of Phillips and Bruno Pereira were found on 15 June 2022.

Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira arrived at Lago do Jaburu, a town near the surveillance base of the National Indian Foundation (Funai) on the Itui River on 3 June 2022. Pereira was a government official expert in indigenous people and their affairs. Pereira was introducing Phillips to his contacts and acting as his guide for Phillips to visit and interview indigenous people. The pair was documenting the violent conflicts between criminal groups, government agents, and indigenous people in the region. On 6 June 2022, the pair went missing in the Javari Valley, a remote region in Brazil’s far west of the Amazon rainforest and home to thousands of indigenous people from more than 20 groups. The place was rife with several organized criminal activities such as illegal poaching, mining, and logging. During the course of their work, the pair disappeared.
Two suspects, brothers Amarildo and Oseney da Costa de Oliveira were arrested in connection with the pair’s disappearance. The search that included the army, navy, and police ended after 10 days after one of the suspects, Amarildo took the investigators to the site where human remains were buried in. The bodies’ identities were confirmed to be Phillips and Pereira.

Phillips’s family issued a statement regarding his death.
It reads, “We are heartbroken at the confirmation that Dom and Bruno were murdered and extend our deepest sympathies to Alessandra, Beatriz, and the other Brazilian family members of both men. We are grateful to all those who have taken part in the search, especially the indigenous groups who worked tirelessly to find evidence of the attack”.
His wife added, Now we can bring them home and say goodbye with love.
