Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

While Emily was born in Statesville, her family later moved and settled at nearby High Point, North Carolina. She became very interested in writing at a young age,  thinking of it as a possible future profession. She attended T. Wingate Andrews High School which served her locality, and after matriculating enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, to complete her bachelor’s degree. After graduating she continued her studies, moving to Los Angeles where she enrolled at Loyola Marymount University to complete a master’s degree. The private university in L.A. is one of the largest Roman Catholic universities located on the US West Coast. While living in Los Angeles, she became increasingly interested in an acting profession, and decided to train in performance as well as improvisation. She joined the group called “The Groundlings”. while still retaining her interests in writing.

Writing Behind the Scenes – Saturday Night Live

Spivey started her writing career in 2000, joining the staff of the comedy sketch show “Mad TV”.

The show was inspired by the magazine “Mad”, and featured various segments often taken from concepts popularized by the magazine. She stayed with the show for a year, and then became a writer for the animated series “King of the Hill”. The sitcom follows the life of the Hills family, aired on MTV, and is one of the longest-running series on Fox.

At around the same time, she was hired to become a staff writer for the late-night program “Saturday Night Live”. The show is one of the most recognized late-night programs in the US, rising to popularity during the 1980s, and responsible for launching the career of many writers and actors, many of whom would later find success in other shows.

Over the years, the show has won numerous awards, including 71 Primetime Emmys, including one for Emily in 2002; she also won a Writers Guild of American Award in 2008.

Life After Saturday Night Live – Creator Debut

Following her departure from the staff of “SNL”, Emily worked as a writer for “Parks and Recreation” for a year, but left that job for the prospect of creating a show, and in 2011 launched the NBC sitcom “Up All Night”, which starred Will Arnett and Christina Applegate. The show tells the story of a television producer and her stay-at-home husband, who has to adjust to their new lives as they have a newborn baby.

The show ran for two seasons before suddenly going to an hiatus, eventually leading to its cancellation.

Emily then worked on the pilot for “Murder Police”, and wrote for “Modern Family”. In 2015, she joined the staff of “The Last Man on Earth”, a television series that aired on Fox, which tells the story of a man and woman who meet during a post-apocalyptic world, where the population of the earth has been diminished. Meeting each other, they feel the need to have to marry and start a family to re-populate the earth, before discovering that there are other survivors.

Recent Projects – Bless the Harts

In 2016, Spivey worked on a couple of projects, including “Maya & Marty” aired on NBC and starring Martin Short and Maya Marty. The show featured comedy sketches and musical performances, and lasted for a season. During this period she also worked on the comedy film “Masterminds”, starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig, and is based on the Loomis Fargo Robbery which occurred in North Carolina in 1997.

In 2019 she worked on the film “Wine Country”, in which starred her alongside Jason Schwartzman, Tina Fey and Maya Rudolph in the story of a group of middle-aged women who go on a trip across California, for what they deemed was a wine-tasting tour. The film was released through Netflix, and attracted mixed reviews.

During the same year, she created her second animated show – “Bless the Harts” – which began airing on Fox.

Then series tells the story of the Harts, a working-class family in North Carolina, and is loosely based on Spivey’s life growing up in the state, and stars Kirsten Wiig, Kumali Nanjiani, Maya Rudolph and Jillian Bell. The show was also said to be inspired by “King of the Hill”, and loosely shares in its universe.

Personal Life

Emily married editor Scott Philbrook in 1993, and they have a son born in 2009. The two worked on several projects together, most recently “Wine Country”. She is a big fan of various animated programs, having followed them during her youth. Some of her favorite shows include “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers”.
