Early life and education
Mark was raised an only child in Taipei, by his father Shu-Hai Chao, an actor and a TV host also known as Allen Chao, and his mother who was a housewife. His family moved to Canada shortly after he finished elementary school, and he attended a public school in Oak Bay, British Columbia, where he first started acting, appearing in most of the school plays.

Mark was also physically active as he played football and excelled at soccer, however, he chose the career as an actor over being a professional soccer player. He continued his education at the University of Victoria, graduating with a double Bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology in 2006.
Career as an actor
Mark worked several jobs for three years to financially support himself, before making his debut TV series appearance in the Taiwanese drama series “Black & White”, which starred Vic Chou, Ivy Chen, and Janine Chang, and which was nominated for 11 awards, winning five.
He made his debut film appearance in the following year, portraying the lead character Zhou Yiwen in the action movie “Monga”, which starred Ethan Juan and Ju-Lung Ma, and follows five boys who are growing up to become criminals.
Mark was invited to appear in five movies in 2012, with the most notable being “Black & White Episode I: The Dawn of Assault”, “Caught in the Web”, and “I Love You to Love Me” before he played Cheng Xiaozheng in the drama movie “So Young” in 2013, which is closely based on Xin Yiwu’s book “To Our Youth that is Fading Away”. In the same year, Mark starred as Di Renjie in the action adventure movie “Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon”.
The following years saw Mark portray lead characters in movies “Black & White: The Dawn of Justice” in 2014, “Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe” in 2015, and “The Warriors Gate” in 2016. He won his first lead role in a TV series in “Eternal Love” in 2017, portraying three characters Ye Hua, Mo Yuan, and Zhao Ge alongside famous Chinese actress Yang Mi. Mark sang two songs for the film “Black & White” – “Rogue Justice” and “Ruffian and Hero” – and sang “Tonight Tonight” for the movie “Monga”. He is credited with singing six songs in the romantic film “First Time”, including “Cry Like A Little Child”, “Stand By Me”, and “We Are Not Opponents”.
Mark has been nominated for 14 awards, winning five. He won his first – a 44th Golden Bell Award for the Best Actor for his performance in “Black & White” in 2009 – and was then nominated for five awards for his performance in “Monga”, winning a 54th Asia-Pacific Film Festival Award for the Best Actor in 2010. He was rewarded with a 15th Huabiao Award for an Outstanding Chinese actor for his performance in “Caught in the Web” in 2013, and was then nominated for two awards for his appearance in “So Young”.

Love life and relationships
Mark met Gao Yuanyuan in 2011 while the two were shooting together for the film “Caught in the Web”, and they started dating about a month later. They were together for nearly three years before marrying on 5 June 2014, and Gao gave birth to their child a year later.
