Louis William Tomlinson was born on the 24th December 1991, in Doncaster, England, as the only child of Troy Austin and Johannah Poulston. His parents parted their ways while he was still in his infancy, and his mother later married to Mark Tomlinson, hence Louis’ surname. From his stepfather’s previous relationship, he has seven half-siblings.

In the early 2000s, young Louis appeared as an extra in a couple of episodes of ITV’s TV drama series “Fat Friends”, after which he decided to enroll at the acting school in the city of Barnsley. His real acting debut occurred in 2006, when he appeared briefly in the TV movie “If I Had You”, then in an episode of the BBC’s TV drama series “Waterloo Road”.

He attended Hall Cross Academy in his home town as a sixth-form student, before enrolling at The Hayfield School.

However, after failing his first year of A-levels, he went back to Hall Cross Academy where he freshly began his A levels. Additionally, Tomlinson also appeared in a variety of the school’s stage plays and musical productions, including portraying the role of Danny Zuko in Hall Cross’ production of “Grease”. During his teenage years, Louis had a variety of odd jobs, including working at the local cinema, at the Doncaster Rovers Football Club’s stadium, and also as a waiter.

In 2009, Louis appeared at an audition for “The X Factor” but was rejected during the production phase. In the following year, he auditioned for “The X Factor” again, but didn’t make it past the judges’ houses phase to advance to the boys category. Alongside Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik – all ‘too good to throw away, but not interesting enough to make it as soloists’, Louis Tomlinson was put into a five-piece boy band.

After two weeks of practicing together and getting to know each other, they came up with the name One Direction, and eventually finished third in the competition’s finals.

Despite not winning the seventh season of “The X Factor”, the boys quickly gained a huge dose of popularity, and received a warm welcome from the audience, at first in the UK and later around the world. They were signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Records, and soon after went on The X Factor Live Tour. In November 2011, One Direction released its debut studio album entitled “Up All Night” which produced hit singles such as “What Makes You Beautiful” and “One Thing”, and eventually sold over 4.5 million copies by the end of 2012.

Following their initial success, in November 2012 the boys released their second studio album named “Take Me Home”, which was later certified double platinum with over 2 million sold copies in the US alone. Prior to announcing an ‘indefinite hiatus‘ in 2016, One Direction released three more studio albums – “Midnight Memories” in 2013, “Four” in 2014 and the most recent entitled “Made in the A.M.” which hit the charts in 2015.

With over 200 awards and accolades won, including 28 Teen Choice, seven BRIT, seven American Music, six Billboard Music and four MTV Video Music Awards, One Direction is certainly one of the most successful bands in the history of the music industry, and the first band in the US to ever have four of their first albums reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. In 2014 One Direction was appointed as “The Artist of the Year” by Billboard, while Forbes ranked them as the fourth highest-earning celebrities in 2015.

As the leader of the group, Louis wrote or co-wrote 38 of One Direction’s songs, including six of their greatest hit singles.

In 2015, Tomlinson appeared alongside Simon Cowell as a guest judge during the 12th season of “The X Factor”, after which he launched his own record label – Triple Strings Ltd. His debut solo single entitled “Just Hold On” was released in December 2016, and peaked at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart as well as No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Digital Songs Sales chart.
