Freddy Miyares was born in the USA on 26 October 1992 – his zodiac sign is Scorpio and he holds American nationality. He is an actor, perhaps best known for his portrayal of Raymond Santana, one of the lead characters in the biographical crime mini-series “When They See Us” in 2019, which counted four episodes. It was created by Ava DuVernay and starred Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris and Ethan Herisse, and follows the true story of five teenagers who are wrongly accused of attacking people in Central Park.
The mini-series was a huge success, winning 25 awards including two Primetime Emmys, including Freddy and his colleagues won an African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Award for Best Ensemble as well as an Online Film & Television Association (OFTAN) Award for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture or Limited Series. It was nominated for 76 other awards too.
Early life and education
Freddy was raised in Los Angeles, California alongside his older sister Alejandra Miyares by their white father who is the owner of a small grocery store, and their Latina mother who is working as a dance instructor.
Freddy is of part-Cuban descent and can both speak and write Spanish; he is very close to his parents, especially his mother whom he credits with his success in the film industry.
Freddy became interested in acting while attending elementary school, as he was a member of the school’s drama club and appeared in several school plays, as well as a couple performed at a local theatre. Upon matriculation in 2008, Freddy worked several jobs to financially support himself before he eventually enrolled at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting in 2017.
Career as an actor
Freddy made his debut TV series appearance in 2018, when he portrayed Javi in the episode “Through the Fog” of the mystery crime series “Elementary”, which was created by Robert Doherty and starred Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu and Aidan Quinn. It follows Sherlock Holmes and his friend who are now working as detectives in New York City, and was successful as it won six awards and was nominated for 19 others, including two Primetime Emmys.
In 2019, Freddy was invited to guest star as Sergeant Alejandr Ximenez in the episode “Above the Knee” of the drama series “The Code”, which counted 13 episodes and starred Anna Wood, Ato Essandoh and Phillipa Soo, while it follows the lives of people working in the military’s courtroom.
The same year saw him play Jose Garcia, one of the lead characters in the drama series “The L Word: Generation Q”, which also starred Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey, and which gained mixed reviews.
After gaining recognition for his acting skills, Freddy was invited to guest star in the TV Special “Oprah Winfrey Presents: When They See Us Now” in 2019, and he has recently been cast to portray Skel in the upcoming action adventure movie “DMZ”, directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Roberto Patino and Brian Wood. The movie will star Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt and Josh Pais.
Love life and girlfriend
Freddy met the American actress Aurora Perrineau in 2019, when they were cast to star together in the series “When They See Us”.
Aurora has been part of the film industry since 2011, and has appeared in the musical fantasy comedy movie “Jem and the Holograms” in 2015, as well as portraying one of the lead characters in the crime series “Prodigal Son” in 2019. The two dated for several months and often uploaded pictures of themselves together onto their Instagram accounts, however, after the shooting for “When They See Us” ended, they deleted the pictures, so it’s widely believed that they are no longer together.
Many people say that Freddy was only looking to be with someone just for the duration of the shooting for the series, which eventually hurt Aurora.
He is currently single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
Hobbies and other interests
Freddy is interested in many things – he learned to play the guitar while attending Carnegie Mellon, while he also knows how to do pantomime, to dance to hip hop music, and to play basketball. He has been training in martial arts for several years now, while he trained kick-boxing prior to that.
Freddy likes to spend his free time outdoors in nature, and often runs in a park close to his home, while he also has four to five training sessions at the gym each week, thus his muscular body. He is a lover of animals, and has two pet dogs.
