Early Life and Family

Michael William ‘Mike’ Comrie was born on 11th September 1980 under the Virgo star sign, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he spent the majority of his youth.

He finished high school in his hometown, and started his career as an ice hockey player with a local club.

His father, Bill Comrie was a former co-owner with his brothers of the furniture company The Brick, which afforded Mike a comfortable upbringing. His mother Theresa passed away from cancer in 1990 when Mike had only 10 years old.

He has an older sister Cathy and older brother Paul, born to Bill and Theresa. His brother Paul had also played ice hockey, and is a recognized forward in the National Hockey League (NHL).

His father remarried, and had two more children with his second wife, Eric and Ty, who are also two talented hockey players – Eric is a goaltender ,and Ty plays in the centre position, the same as Mike did throughout his career.

Educational Background

Mike finished his high school education at Jasper Place High School in his hometown – in 1993 at the age of 13, Mike participated in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Following matriculation, he moved to the US to attend the University of Michigan, playing for the ice hockey team from 1998 to 2000, occupying the centre position in both his freshman and sophomore years.

After graduating, Mike was drafted by his hometown club, the Edmonton Oilers.

Career

Mike started his career as a professional ice hockey player when he signed a $10 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the 2000 to 2001 season. At the time, he was a free agent and permitted to sign with any club. During the three-year contract, Mike scored 133 points in 192 games, which made him a formidable offensive player.

In 2003, Mike was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, and played 21 games for the Flyers until he went to play for the Phoenix Coyotes in that same year, where he played the rest of that season.

In 2004/5, the NHL lockout saw the cancellation of the tournament, during which time Mike moved to Sweden where he competed in the Swedish Hockey League’s Elitserien, the highest Swedish league in professional ice hockey of the country – Mike signed with Farjestad BK. When the NHL tournament resumed, Mike returned to play for the Coyotes for the 2005/6 season.

The sports star continued to play for the Coyotes until he was traded in 2007 to the Ottawa Senators, playing an amazing season with the Senators which saw them through to the finals. Then in July of that same year, Mike signed with the New York Islanders, renewing his contract in 2008 worth $4 million.

In the 2009/10 season, Mike returned to his former team the Edmonton Oilers, then in 2010 he was reassigned to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but due to a recurring hip injury, Mike sat out most of the season. He continued to play for the Penguins until 2012, when after repeated hip surgery, Mike announced his retirement on 13 February.

Mike has also played in three world cup championships for Canada, in 2002, 2003 and 2006, winning the gold medal along with the team in 2003.

There was also a scandalous occurrence during one of his wild nights, in which Mike faced allegations of rape.

The woman, who never revealed her identity, had accused Mike of sexual assault, but the professional athlete insisted that it was consensual.

The only relationship that Mike had engaged in, that was made public, was his marriage to Hilary Duff. The two started dating in 2007, and he eventually proposed in February 2010.

The couple married in Santa Barbara on the 14th August of 2010, and their only child, son Luca Cruz Comrie was born on the 20th of March 2012. Less than two years later on the 10 January 2014, they separated, and Hilary initially filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalized in 2016, but during the procedure, Hilary had to buy back Mike’s share of their home in California, which was worth $2.5 million.
