Early life and education

Daniel has been told that his mother ran away from home as a teenager leaving him behind, and that his father is black. They named him after Sundiata Keita, an African prince who founded the Mali Empire, and it means ‘a hungry lion’. Daniel was raised in Chicago by his adoptive parents Bill Condon, who was working as a policeman, and Catherine Condon who was a civil rights worker.

Daniel grew up being interested in football, and during the time spent at Mount Carmel High School he played for two football teams which were competing in the State Championship. He became interested in acting upon enrolling at Florida A&M University l,ater switching to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, from which he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 1993. He continued his education at New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, obtaining his Master’s degree in Fine Arts in 1996.
