Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
Ethan grew up in Fort Wayne in a very traditional Jewish family. He developed his interest in acting as a young teen when he was given his first recording device. He loved making short videos which would later help with his decision in becoming a producer. He attended Mercer Island High School located in Washington State.
While in high school he gained his first film opportunity, as he auditioned for a role in the film “The Chocolate War”, which was released in 1988, which is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Cormier.
The film proved to be a success with critics who reviewed it positively, but it failed to gain a big audience despite the novel being considered one of the best of its kind. After matriculating, he enrolled at Northwestern University and was intent on completing his studies while continuing to gain acting work.
Acting Projects
In 2000 Sandler gained his first mainstream television projects, with guest appearances in “The $treet” and “Sex and the City”. The following year, he had a minor role in the film “The Princess Diaries” which is a film adaptation of a novel of the same name by Meg Cabot, and starred Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway; it was highly successful at the box office, which led to a sequel a few years later.
In 2002 he had a guest role in “Will and Grace”, and then got one of his most notable roles in “Crossing Jordan”, which he worked on for the next five years, appearing in a total of 15 episodes.
The show which aired on NBC follows a forensics expert in Massachusetts, as he works with a team of detectives to solve various criminal cases – the main star of the show was Jill Hennessey who played the forensics expert, Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh. While he didn’t have a lot of airtime, many of his followers got to know him through the show. During this time, he also worked on other projects such as the television movie “A Carol Christmas”.
In 2004, he worked on the film “The Bourne Supremacy”, which is based on the Robert Ludlum character Jason Bourne. The film is the sequel to 2002’s “The Bourne Identity”, and starred Matt Damon. It is also based on the Bourne novels, though the plot had been altered from the original.
Recent Acting Projects
In 2007 Ethan ventured into voice acting on the film “Meet the Robinsons”, voicing a plethora of characters including Cousin Laszlo, Uncle Dimitri, Aunt Petunia, and Uncle Fritz, to name a few. The film was inspired by “A Day with Wilbur Robinson” a children’s book written by William Joyce.
He made a guest appearance in “Psych” (2006-14) before scoring another recurring role for around two years in “Transparent”, a web series centered on the lives of a family who discover that their father is a trans woman, and which won numerous awards.
Afterwards, he was cast as Bert in the film “Gravy”, with Gabriel Luna, Sutton Foster and Jimmi Simpson.
Production Career
In the 2010s, Sandler decided to do more work behind the scenes, rekindling his love for creating projects, and this led to his first production of the sitcom “My Boys”, for which he was also credited as the writer. The show only ran for a season, but it provided him valuable experience, which he used later when he became a consultant to the NBC show “Whitney”. In 2013, he was credited as the co-executive vice producer of “We Are Men”, which aired on CBS, and starred Christopher Nicholas Smith and Kal Penn.
The show had potential, but after two episodes, it was canceled due to the lack of interest by viewers.
He also made a guest appearance in the show “New Girl”, working alongside Zooey Deschanel, and worked as a writer and producer for the show. The show ran for a total of seven seasons though he was only there for the sixth season, helping advance the show’s plot on several fronts. One of his latest projects is “Man with a Plan” which is his most successful endeavor so far – the series stars Matt LeBlanc who takes on the role of a stay-at-home father taking care of his three children while his wife is busy working.
Personal Life
Sandler married actress Kathryn Hahn in 2002 and they have two children together. The couple met each other in college and have been together ever since.
