Early life and Education

James Nicholas Callis was born on 4 June 1971, in Hampstead, London England, where he was raised by parents who owned a bed and breakfast lodging establishment. He is of Polish and Russian-Jewish descent, but has British nationality. He has two sisters, Sarah and Sophie Callis, but it isn’t disclosed whether they are older or younger siblings.

Callis attended St. Martin’s Prep School located in an area of London called Northwood, and then went to the prestigious private Harrow School. After matriculating, he enrolled at the University of York. and graduated in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in English and Related Literature. During his studies he was a rugby player for Derwent College. While a student, he also became involved in acting, writing and directing, becoming one of the members of the Gilbert and Sullivan acting society at the University, and learned to play guitar and piano. Callis appeared in several productions that were staged by his friends at Cambridge University, one of them being “The Dumb Waiter” by Harold Pinter.

After graduating, he did some acting training at the London Academy of Music and Drama Arts (LAMDA), the oldest drama school in the UK.

Career

Callis made his TV debut in 1996, when he landed the role of Major Tim Forrester, a recurring character for the sixth season of the TV series “Soldier Soldier”. That same year he had a small role in the TV crime series, “Murder Most Horrid”. 1996 was also a successful year for his career in theatre, as he won the Jack Tinker Award by Theatre Record Critic of the Year in the category of Most Promising Newcomer for his acting in Jon Maran’s two-hander called “Old Wicked Songs”, in the Gielgud Theatre in London.

He had several minor roles in various TV series, such as “A Dance to the Music of Time”, “Heat of the Sun” and “Ruth Rendell Mysteries”, before being cast as a recurring character in another short-lasting TV series, “Sex, Chips and Rock n’ Roll” in 1999, but that same year he was also cast in “The Scarlet Pimpernel” and “Surety”. In 2000 he portrayed Prince Ahmed in the TV mini-series “Arabian Nights”, and the following year made his directorial debut with “Beginner’s Luck”, that he co-produced with Late Night Pictures and Angel Eye Film and Television, owned by Nick Cohen. The film flopped with the critics, but ran for three weeks in one central London’s cinema, and can still be found in the Icon Catalogue.

That same year, he portrayed Tom in the famous romantic feature film, “Bridget Jones Diary”, alongside Colin Firth, Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant, and reprised his role in the sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” in 2004.

In 2003, he landed the recurring role of Gaius Baltar in the sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica”,  remaining in the show for its five seasons until it ended in 2009, and gaining worldwide recognition. He also reprised the role in the TV movie of the same name in 2007, and appeared in the “Late Show with David Letterman”.

For his portrayal of Baltar, he won the 2006 Saturn Award in the Best Supporting Actor category, as well as an AFI award.

In 2010 he joined the cast of the TV comedy series “Eureka”, alongside Colin Ferguson and Erica Cerra. He portrayed Dr. Trevor Grant, a time traveler that from the year 1947 in the fifth season of the show, and briefly returned as a guest in one episode in the final, eighth season. That same year he was cast as Gabriel McDow in the ABC sci-fi series “Flashforward”, and landed a the titular role in the TV film “Merlin and the Book of Beasts”.

He had a guest role in several episodes of the famous TV series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” in 2013 and 2014, and a recurring role as Lucien Sayer in the 2014 TV series “Matador”, starring Gabriel Luna and Neil Hopkins. In 2015, he had recurring roles in two TV series, “Gallipoli” and “A.D. The Bible Continues”, and also provided the voice of the guest character in the animated TV series “Rick and Morty”, in the episode called “The Wedding Squanchers”.

In 2016, he once again reprised the role of Tom in another “Bridget Jones” sequel, “Bridget Jones’s Baby”, and that same year co-starred in Kenneth Kokin’s thriller, “Blood Moon”.

Next year, he landed another voice acting role, this time voicing the main character, vampire hunter Alucard, in the English dub of the Japanese animated TV series “Castlevania” – as of May 2020, he is still continuing the role.

Most recently Callis played President Lincoln in the 2019 TV movie “Kevin Hart’s Guide to Black History”, and co-starred in Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia’s action TV series, “Blood and Treasure”.

Personal Life

Callis married his long-term girlfriend Neha in December 1998. They have three children together, sons Sacha and Joshua Amaan born in 2003 and 2009, respectively, and daughter Anika Jahan Callis, who was born in 2005. His wife is of Indian ancestry.
