Early life and education
Joel was raised in Hesperia in a Mexican family; his mother is Patricia Pimentel and although Spanish is Joel’s native language, years passed before he learned how to speak or understand it.
He became interested in singing and making music at the age of eight, after being motivated by his grandfather who had been a musician during his teenage years. Joel began taking singing classes, and found comfort in music after being bullied at school due to his ‘different’ looks and the fact that he was Mexican. He was given the nickname ‘potato’, and because of all this, Joel became shy and introverted and didn’t have many friends while growing up.
After he enrolled at high school, he began acting by appearing in school plays, and although he he’s continued with a bit of acting over the years, he’s been primarily focused on his singing career. Joel is not planning on enrolling at college.
Career as a musician
Joel launched his career in 2015, after he applied to compete in the first season of the “La Banda” reality TV show. He reached the finals and there beat Alan Matheus thus becoming a member of the band made up of five boys – Christopher Velez, Richard Camacho, Zabdiel De Jesus, Erick Brian Colon, and Joel. The band was named CNCO in December 2015, and signed a five-year contract with Sony Music Latin, with rapper Wisin producing their first album.
The boys released their debut song entitled “Tan Facil” on 29 January 2016, reaching #25 on Billboard Latin Rhythm Airplay, and held their first concert in The Fillmore Miami Beach. They went on a tour in February 2016, opening for Ricky Martin all around the US as well as in several South American countries such as Argentina and Chile. Their second single entitled “Quisera” was released on 13 May 2016, and in the summer, CNCO was nominated for six awards, winning five of these such as My Pop/Rock Artist Producer’s Choice Award and My Favorite Fan-Army.
They released their debut album “Primera Cita” – “First Date” in English – on 26 August 2016 with 14 songs, while the single “Reggaeto Lento (Bailemos)” released on 7 October became popular worldwide, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs. CNCO had their first solo tour starting 26 February 2017, visiting 15 countries and performing 40 times.
Their second, self-titled album was released on 6 April 2018, peaking at #1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums. They started 2019 with the release of their “Pretend” single on 15 February, and “De Cero” followed on 24 June, with their first extended play (EP) entitled “Que Quienes Somos” released on 11 October 2019 containing seven tracks.
Joel is also an Instagram star as he has gathered over 3.5 million followers on his account.
Family, love life, and relationships
Joel is very close to his mother, and credits her with his success in the music industry, as she encouraged him throughout the years, always believing in him. In 2015, Joel tweeted about how he won’t be having a girlfriend until he turns 50 – up to this day Joel hasn’t talked about any girls he might have dated, which is why there are rumors circulating the internet that the popular singer might be gay.
However, he did state how his celebrity crush is Kendall Jenner, who is an American model and media personality born on 3 November 1995 thus four years older than him. Joel admires Kendall for her attractive looks as well as for her venture into acting, as she has appeared in TV series such as “Khloe & Lamar” in 2011, “I Am Cait” in 2015, and the “Ocean’s 8” film in 2018.
Joel is currently single, he has never been married, and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests
Joel is a huge fan of the film industry, and some of his favorite actors and actresses are Antonio Banderas, Al Pacino, and Cameron Diaz while some of his favorite movies include “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”, “Scarface”, and “There’s Something About Mary”. Travelling is one of his main hobbies, and while performing with CNCO he has been around the US, also to South America and several European countries such as Belgium, France, and Slovenia. He is a lover of animals and has a pet dog.
Joel is physically very active, having several training sessions at the gym each week, thus his muscular body.
He enjoys playing sports in his spare time such as soccer and table tennis, which he mostly plays with his friends from CNCO, and his favorite season is summer as he likes playing beach volleyball and beach soccer and enjoys swimming. Joel is a bit of a shopaholic as he is keen on shopping for clothes, and many people (both guys and girls) have commented on his pictures, stating how they envy him for his style.
