Kathy Kinney was born on the 3rd November 1954 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin USA; she is of Irish ancestry, as she is a daughter of Irish-Americans Harold Kinney and his wife Marian.

She went to Stevens Point Area Senior High School, and after matriculation joined the California Conservation Corps for two years. She did a six-month Back Country season in Kings Canyon, which gave her thousands of dollars in scholarships, and she then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Although she attended the university in the ‘70s, she only got her degree 40 years later, in 2016.

Career Before Acting

Kathy switched Wisconsin for New York in 1976, and started working as a secretary at WCBS-TV; her boss was a hunting enthusiast, and she would often ask him about his achievements while on trips, saying “So, did you kill anything this week”, which later helped her to acquire the role of Mimi.

Concurrently she was also performing at New York comedy clubs, honing her improvisational comedy skills.

Acting Career Beginnings

Once she gathered her comedy skills together, she started teaching improve classes, and was noticed by Bill Sherwood, who then wrote a part just for her in the film “Parting Glances” in 1986; the role of Joan was her acting debut.
