He was born as Dieuson Octave, and later changed his name to Bill Kahan Kapri before adopting his ‘stage name’.
Early life and education
Kodak was raised an only child in Pompano Beach by his mother who was a Haitian immigrant, and the two lived in Golden Acres which is a Pompano Beach public housing project – nothing is known about his father, and it’s believed that he abandoned the family not long after Kodak was born.
Kodak attended an elementary school at which he became interested in rap music, and started making music himself at a local trap house. Decisive about becoming a rapper, Kodak read thesauruses to enrich his vocabulary and write better lyrics. He had outlaw friends with whom he occasionally committed breaking and entering, as well as engaging brawls which eventually led to Kodak being expelled from his elementary school while attending fifth grade. He later stated in an interview that he had an option to choose between selling drugs or becoming a rapper.
He was just six when he chose Lil’ Black as his stage name, later changing to Kodak Black.
Career as a rapper
He was 12 when he launched his career as he joined the band Brutal Youngnz, stayingd with them for over a year before joining the rap band The Kolyons. In December 2013, he launched his solo career with the release of his debut mixtape “Project Baby”.
His second mixtape “Heart of the Projects” came out in December 2014, followed by his third mixtape “Institution” a year later. What really made Kodak popular was the video that the famous rapper Drake uploaded onto the internet which featured him dancing to Kodak’s song “Skrt”. Only a couple of days following the upload of the video, Kodak signed a contract with Atlantic Records.
He went on to collaborate on the song “Lockjaw” with French Montana, and it appeared at #23 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart. Kodak released his new mixtape “Lil B.I.G. Pac” in June 2016, which peaked at #18 on the Heatseakers Albums Chart, and #49 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. His new single “Tunnel Vision” came out on 17 February 2017, and peaked at #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, as well as at #17 on the Canadian Hot 100 Chart.
His first studio album came out on 31 March 2017 entitled “Painting Pictures”, peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 Chart, and he went on to release his mixtape “Project Baby 2” on 18 August 2017 as well as its new version “Project Baby 2: All Grown Up” in November of the same year.
Kodak then released his next mixtape “Heart Break Kodak” on Valentine’s Day 2018, and his second album “Dying to Live” came out on 14 December 2018 and topped the Billboard 200 Chart staying at #1 for a week – two of the songs from the album entitled “Zeze” and “Calling My Spirit”, peaked at #2 and #46 on the Hot 100 Chart, respectively.
Most recently, on 12 May 2020, his latest single “Vultures Cry 2” was released in collaboration with Mike Smiff and WizDaWizard.
Spending time in jail
Kodak has been in and out of jail for various reasons, and was also in a youth detention center three times. He was sent to jail in October 2015 after being charged with being in possession of cannabis, imprisoning a child, and robbery, but was released not long afterwards.
He was arrested again in April 2016 for being in possession of a weapon and marijuana, as well as eluding arrest from police officers. Only a month later, Kodak was arrested again and charged with false imprisonment and armed robbery. In January 2018, he was arrested after live-streaming on Instagram while giving a gun and marijuana to a kid – Kodak was imprisoned, and released on 18 August 2018. On 13 November 2019, he was sentenced to spend 46 months in jail for lying on federal paperwork, and is currently sentenced for another two to seven years for trying to enter the US from Canada with a Glock pistol – he is currently serving time at the United States Penitentiary, Thomson.
There have been many other controversies surrounding his name, including the time in January 2017 when he went live on Instagram filming a woman giving oral sex to him and several of his friends. He has stated that he prefers light-skinned women over black women, as he believes them to be easier to break down while he was also the center of attention in April 2019 when he claimed that he will wait to have sex with the American model and actress Lauren London, whose boyfriend Nipsey Hussle, a rapper, was killed in a shootout only a couple of days prior to his statement.
Love life and relationships
Regardless, Kodak is somewhat secretive when it comes to his love life, and has only talked about one girl he has been with.
In 2016, he started dating Jayda Cheaves, an Instagram star who is followed by over 4.1 million people on the network, and who mostly uploads pictures featuring her boobs and her buttocks – she and Kodak broke up in mid-2017, and Jayda went on to date the rapper Lil Baby and gave birth to their son in February 2019.
Kodak hasn’t talked about any other women he might have dated, but there are rumors circulating the internet that he has been in several other relationships, and that his longest was with a girl whom he met at a party at the age of 16 – they allegedly dated on and off for more than five years.

Hobbies and other interests
Although considered a criminal by many, Kodak is a philanthropist who has donated money to various charity organizations including $10,000 to Jack and Jill Children’s Center. It was reported in November 2018 that Kodak was in Haiti building a school. He donated money to Paradise Childcare on 20 December 2018, and thus made it possible for 150 children to receive gifts in Broward County in Florida – he also donated $5,000 to the foundation to organize a Christmas party. He donated $2,500 to the family of Terrence Carraway, a police officer who died in a shootout, and also gave $12,500 to a teenage girl Paige Cook who wanted to provide notebooks and pencils for 7,600 students living in Cleburne Independent School District, Texas.
