Shane was raised alongside his siblings Macaulay, Quinn, Christian, Kieran, Rory and Dakota, by their father Kit Culkin, a famous American stage actor, and their mother who was a telephone operator – Shane’s sister Dakota died after being hit by a car on 10 December 2008.

Shane received his first name because the 1953 movie “Shane” was his father’s favorite, while his middle name ‘Arliss’ is a character in the 1957 movie “Old Yeller”. Shane grew up watching his father perform, as well as his siblings and himself became interested in acting, practicing his skills at a local theatre as well as with his school’s drama club. Shane attended St. Joseph’s School of Yorkville (Catholic school) at which he was interested in sports such as soccer and football. He went on to appear in several movies such as “The Midnight Hour” in 1985, the 1988 “Rocket Gibraltar”, and in 1989 “Uncle Buck”, however, he only gained recognition after starring in “Home Alone”, for which performance he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, while he actually won a Young Artist Award and an American Comedy Award. He reprised his role in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” in 1992, and for it received $4.5 million having only received $110,000 for the first movie – the following year saw him appear in the thriller movie “The Good Son”.

In 1994 after his roles in three movies – “Richie Rich”, “The Pagemaster” and “Getting Even with Dad” – Macaulay decided to take a break from acting, and enrolled at a Manhattan private high school, returning to acting in 1998 with his role in the music video “Sunday” by Sonic Youth.

He then starred in the theatre play “Madame Melville” performed in London’s West End, and in 2003 Macaulay appeared in a single episode of the comedy series “Will & Grace”.

He launched his career as a writer three years later, when his semi-autobiographical book “Junior” was published.
