He is well recognized for playing as a midfielder for Primeira Liga’s side Sporting CP and the Portugal national team. He began his career with Ericeirense, before moving LigaPro side Estoril and helped Sporting win a double of the Primeira Liga and Taca da Liga in the 2020-2021 season. He opted to play for the Portugal national team, and made his senior international debut in 2021, being chosen in Portugal’s squad for the UEFA Euro 2020. Matheu scored his first international goal on 24th March 2022 in a 3-1 home win over Turkey in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup qualification play-offs.

- Matheus Nunes began his football career playing with local side Ericeirense after which he made his senior debut for Ericeirense during the 2015-2016 season, in the Lisbon Football Association.
- He then started the 2017 pre-season on trial at Oriental, but was not signed due to a thigh injury, and subsequently returned to his first club.
Estoril
- Matheus signed with Estoril in the summer of 2018 and made his debut in the LigaPro on 14th October in a 2-2 draw against Varzim. He was associated with the reserve team during most of his spell.
Sporting CP
- Nunes joined Sporting CP of the Primeira Liga on a five-and-a-half-year contract on 29th January 2019 and his performances against Sporting for Estoril in the Taça da Liga group stage in the 2018-2019 season was noted by the Sporting scouting team, who decided to sign him.
- He received his first call-up to the first team by manager Rúben Amorim on 4th June 2020 and agreed to a contract extension on 23rd October.
- On 2nd January 2021, he scored his first goal in the Portuguese top division, closing the 2–0 home victory over Braga and his second came the following 1st February, in injury time to help the hosts defeat Benfica 1-0 in the Derby de Lisboa, being named man of the match.
- On 15th September, he earned a permanent place in the starting eleven in his UEFA Champions League debut, he provided an assist for Paulinho in a 5–1 away defeat to Ajax.

International career
- Matheus received his Portuguese passport after living in the country for ten years on 8th August 2021 and was called up by Brazil national team manager Tite as one of nine replacements for the players based in the United Kingdom, for three 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chile, Argentina, and Peru; However, Nunes refused the call, due not having the complete vaccination for the COVID-19, which was a standard required in Portugal.
- He decided not to represent his country of birth after he was contacted by Portugal’s national team manager Fernando Santos, who convinced him to represent Portugal.
