He is originally from the Olympic Peninsula and was born on 29 August 1951. His ancestors settled in the area and Dodge grew up as a child there. He had enjoyed the outside. Dodge also lived as the son of a former Marine, Ronald L. Dodge, in many other locations around the country and the world. The younger Dodge completed high school graduation in Okinawa, Japan. He enlisted and served in the Marine Corps for six years.

Dodge decided to leave the modern world because of the pressures of modern living and to return to the dense forest. Because of his choice not to wear shoes or sandals while walking in the forest, he was called “The Barefoot Sensei;” a move he claimed helped cure him of plantar fasciitis, back pain, and hammertoes. He also felt it had helped him to communicate with the natural world more intuitively. Dodge is still engaged with the culture, despite the desire to be isolated from modern civilization. In 1994, he and Jacquie Chandler developed an earth-based fitness program which they named The EarthGym, a forest fitness program where nature provides most of the physical training equipment. He is the star of The Legend of Mick Dodge’s National Geographic Channel Reality TV series about his extraordinary life in a forest.
