He made his UEFA Champions League debut for the club in a 1-0 loss against Liverpool where he suffered a meniscus injury, keeping him out for several months. In his first season, he made 22 appearances for the club, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists in all the competitions as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup that season.
