Early life and Education

Amy Pietz was born on 6 March 1969, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. Nothing is known about her biological parents, but she was adopted by a nurse called Nancy Pietz and a truck driver, Arnold Pietz. It isn’t known whether or not she has any siblings, adopted or biological.

During her childhood, she trained in ballet and was preparing to make dancing her profession, but because of low pay she shifted her career focus in another direction. She matriculated from The Milwaukee High School of Arts, and then moved to Chicago, Illinois US, to enroll at DePaul University. She graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from The Theatre School. She then returned to Milwaukee, and briefly studied opera at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Career

Pietz made her acting debut playing guest roles in TV series, including the famous science fiction series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” that aired from 1987 until 1994.

She also had small roles in the 1993 film “Rudy” and Christmas family comedy “Jingle All the Way”. She became a regular cast member in “Muscle”, a short-lived The WB series from 1995. The role that brought her into the spotlight was the NBC series that aired from 1995 until 1999, “Caroline in the City”, portraying Annie Spadaro. For this performance, she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series in 1999. During the next year, Pietz’s landed her first starring role in the NBC series “Cursed”, in which she acted next to Steven Weber, but which was canceled after the first season.

The next year, she performed in the theatre, in the musical entitled “The Boswell Sisters”, in which she portrayed Martha Boswell, the youngest of the trio of sisters in the famous harmony singing group. In 2004, Pietz landed the a starring role in the ABC series “Rodney”, in which she played the crazy sister of Jennifer Aspen, through until 2006. She portrayed mother in “Aliens in America”, The CW’s series that aired from 2007 to 2008, and other starring roles she had in the following years were in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”, “Ally McBeal”, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”, “Desperate Housewives”, “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Two and a Half Men”.

Her most famous role was that of Donna, “Sid and Dexter” manager, in the NBC comedy sitcom “The Office” that she landed in 2010, and kept for that entire season.

Pietz started 2011 as Meredith King, Chloe King’s mother, in the ABC drama series entitled “The Nine Lives of Chloe King”. In 2016 she landed the role of Deirdre Hackmeyer, boss of the main character, in The CW drama series under the title “No Tomorrow”. That same year, she co-starred in the fourth season of “Maron”, Marc Maron’s IFC series, as Natalie, a rehab patient.

The next year, she had the guest role of Adrienne in the TV series “You’re the Worst”, and also a recurring role in the first season of “Hit the Road”, in which she portrayed Meg Swallow.

In 2019, she appeared in the comedy short “Anything for you, Abby”, and made a brief appearance in the series “Conversations in L.A.” as Mrs. Shannon Pierce in the episode “The Department of Justice”. Pietz portrayed Meredith in three episodes of “Animal Kingdom”, and could be seen in an episode of “The Flash” as Debbie Dibny. She was Janice in three episodes of “Modern Family”, then landed a guest appearance in the “Bones” drama series, starring Emily Deschanel.

Pietz played Betty in the 2020 comedy drama film “Hooking Up”. She will also appear in the TV series currently being filmed, called “Big Shot”, in which she is said to portray the character of Caren Korn.

Personal Life

Pietz was adopted, and hasn’t disclosed anything about her biological parents. When she was 23, she gave birth to a son she named Benjamin, whom she gave up for adoption several weeks later, but she never explained the reasons behind this decision. She briefly volunteered as a birthing coach, otherwise known as doula, after she was inspired by people who helped her birth her first son.

Her first husband was Kenneth Alan Williams, actor who is best known for his appearances in TV series “V.I.P.” and “ER”. The couple married in 1997, but divorced in 2006 – they didn’t have children.

On 17^th January 2010, Pietz married Frank Stier – the couple has two children whose names have been kept private. Pietz is rather active on social media.
