Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
Julianne grew up in Medford, the eldest among four children. She didn’t intend on pursuing a career in entertainment at first, but developed an interest while attending Arlington Catholic High School. The school is located in nearby Boston, and after matriculating, she was offered a modeling contract which led her to find work in New York. After working as a model for six months, she became disinterested in continuing due to the pressures of the industry.
She took a break from work for a while, and then reinvigorated her interest as she was offered a contract in Paris, where she lived for six months.
She then returned to New York and pursued a college education, enrolling at Hunter College as a general studies student. At the time she wanted to transition to acting, so she began studying the craft while working as a waitress to help make ends meet. She eventually quit college two years into it, to fully pursue acting, and gained her first film projects in the late 1990s, including “One True Thing” and “The Love Letter”.
Continued Acting Work
Nicholson also worked on television, mainly guest appearances in shows such as “New York Undercover” and “Nothing Sacred’.
She gained a bit of long term work in 1999 when she joined the series “Storm of the Century” which was created by Stephen King, and is one of the few of his projects that are not based on his writings. Soon more opportunities opened up for her, and she gained her first regular role in the series “The Others” which aired for 13 episodes, featuring characters with psychic abilities who fight against supernatural forces.
In 2001, she gained a bit of attention as she became a main cast member in “Ally McBeal” and staying until its end in mid-2002.
The show was noted for finding a huge amount of popularity during its early run, winning numerous awards and elevating the career of Calista Flockhart as well as other cast members. Julianne then worked on the short-lived “Presidio Med”, before gaining one of her most notable roles in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”, the third series of the “Law & Order” franchise, which ran for 10 seasons, though she was only a part of it for three.
Rise to Prominence
While Julianne was gaining roles on television, she also pursued film work when she had the time.
She worked alongside Demi Moore for the film “Passion of Mind”, directed by Alain Berliner, and starred in the independent film “Tully” which also starred Glenn Fitzgerald. The film is based on a short story written by Tom McNeal, and her performance saw her nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. She also worked on “Speakeasy”, “I’m with Lucy”, and “Seeing Other People”, the latter earning her a US Comedy Arts Festival Award.
Nearing the end of the decade, she worked on the romantic comedy film “Puccini for Beginners” in which she had a minor role, then alongside Sally Field in the film “Two Weeks” before being cast in the directorial debut of John Krasinski – “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men”.
In 2013, her popularity increased significantly as she played the role of Ivy Weston in “August: Osage County”, which featured a star-studded cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
Recent Projects
Nicholson continued to enjoy consistent work in recent years, working on films such as “Black Mass”, “From Nowhere”, and “Sophie and the Rising Sun”. In 2017, she was cast as Diane Rawlinson in “I, Tonya”, a biographical film about the life of former figure skater Tonya Harding, who became involved in an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan which led to the end of her career. The titular character was portrayed by Margot Robbie, and the film received positive reviews for the performances of its actors, but criticism for presenting Tonya as a victim.
On television, Nicholson portrayed Esther Randolf during two seasons of the show “Boardwalk Empire” which aired on HBO; the show follows the life of a politician who gains control of Atlantic City during the 1920s up to the 1930s, and attracted a lot of attention for its story inspired by actual figures from history and its presentation, winning numerous awards. She also gained acclaim for her work in a season of “Masters of Sex”, in which she played Dr. Lillian DePaul. The series is based on the similarly titled biography of Thomas Maier, telling the story of the research team Masters and Johnson who were a few of the pioneers in the study of human sexuality.
Personal Life
Julianne met actor Jonathan Cake while filming the pilot for an HBO show called “Marriage”, which was never picked up by the network. The two hit it off and started a relationship leading to their marriage in 2004. The couple has two children together, though they don’t talk a lot about their relationship. Cake is best known for his work in the 1990s, in various films such as “Mosley” and “Noah’s Ark”.
