Early life and family

Monica Louise Horan was born 29 January 1963, in Darby, Pennsylvania USA, to parents Robert J. Horan and Selma Spencer, who worked as a courthouse officer and Register of Wills clerk, respectively. She is a middle child who grew up in a Catholic home with older brother Stephen and younger sister Jennifer.

Educational Background

Being raised Catholic, Monica was sent to an all-girls school for most of her primary and secondary schooling. She matriculated from Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School for Girls in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1980. She was then admitted to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York and graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts.

First Step

After college, Monica opted to permanently move to New York to pursue her acting dreams in Broadway. Her father was ambivalent about it at first, but eventually supported her decision, albeit reluctantly. She was able to land a role and performed in stage plays with smaller audiences known as off-off Broadway theatre.

She did this for quite some time while working as a sales agent for a telephone company called Telecharge to pay the bills. Monica made it big when she landed a role in the TV sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond” in 1997. Her debut appearance was in Episode 14 of Season 1 as Amy McDougall, the on and off girlfriend and later wife of Raymond’s older brother, Robert Barone, played by Brad Garett. At first, she was just a recurring role for the first seven seasons but was promoted as one of the main cast in Seasons 8 and 9.

Monica worked on the show for a total of 66 episodes. “Everybody Loves Raymond” stayed on the air from 1996 up to 2005 with 210 episodes for nine seasons. Personal Life

Monica was married to Philip Rosenthal on 22 April 1990, and had two children named Ben and Lily. They met in college when they were both studying at Hofran University. He clearly was attracted to her early on, but since he was four years older than her, Philip decided to let her graduate first. However, it took him another couple of years after her graduation before asking for a date. It is of no surprise to their friends that they clicked together as they share the same interests. When they decided to get married, Philip’s grandmother objected to the union.

The grandmother did not even want to meet with Monica because of her religious affiliation. His family is Jewish and descendants of Holocaust survivors. It would be unthinkable for Philip’s family if his wife do not share the same religious beliefs. The Catholic-raised Monica then decided to convert to Judaism. The transition was not difficult to do since at age 13, she discovered that her biological maternal grandfather was Jewish.

From then on, she had a very good relationship with his family. In fact, she called her husband’s parents as her friends. He started as an actor after college but immediately shifted his focus on the production side of filming. He wrote and developed new concepts for TV with shows such as “Coach,” “Baby Talk,” “Somebody Feed Phil,” “Exporting Raymond,” and many more. He received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing, and won a Peabody award for a 9/11 telethon in America called “Tribute to Heroes,” which he co-wrote and was aired lived on all four major television networks. His most notable achievement and biggest earner was the TV sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond,” wherein he was the creator, writer, and executive producer for all its nine seasons. The show won 15 awards including Outstanding Comedy Series and received a total of 98 nominations from Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Producers Guild of America Awards, Satellite Awards, American Film Institute, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Charity

Monica along with her friend Kevin Kane started the Flourish Foundation where they aim to support arts education in schools.

She later on created the Rosenthal Family Foundation along with her husband wherein they help by providing funds to support arts education with different organizations, such as UCLA Foundation, The Students First Foundation, Homeboy Industries, and their alma mater Hofstra University. This is their way of giving back to the community by granting assistance to the less privileged in pursuing their ambitions in the field of Arts.The Rosenthal Family Foundation also contributes to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, and provides funding to Temple Israel of Hollywood and Chabad of Greater Los Feliz synagogues.

Monica is a Democratic Party active supporter. She and her husband donated $1 million to Barack and Michelle’s non-profit organization called Obama Foundation. They hosted a Democratic Fundraiser with Michelle Obama in their Hancock Park home in Los Angeles in 2014.
