Career

First Step

At age 19, living alone in the big city of Toronto, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a film and television actor. She started auditioning for roles even for TV commercials, and in 2013 she was tapped by the J. Walter Thompson Agency to be the girl in Tim Horton’s holiday season’s national TV advertisement, entitled “Hi.” In 2014 she had a minor role in a Canadian-American television sitcom, “Working the Engels,” but which was canceled after 12 episodes in Canada and only aired five episodes in the US.

While it did not last as long as she’d hoped, it was a great start for her TV career.

Further success

In 2015, she had a recurring role in the second season of “The Strain”, based on a horror novel trilogy with the same name created by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, which aired until 2017 on FX network.  In that same year, she was chosen to play Dr. Asha Mirani, a supporting role in Season 4 of the Canadian medical-supernatural TV series entitled, “Saving Hope,” which aired for five seasons from 2015 up to 2017.

It was picked up in the US by NBC but only for one season.

Parveen also had a supporting role in another supernatural drama TV series, “Beyond,” in 2016, which was aired on Freeform Network, and was then available for streaming on the Freeform app; the show lasted for two seasons before it was canceled in 2018.

However, 2018 proved to be her lucky year, as she was included in the regular cast of the American supernatural television series entitled, “Manifest,” which was aired on NBC.

She played the role of a medical researcher, Saanvi Bahl, who was a passenger in a plane that supposedly vanished and all presumed dead, for about five years. Her research would prove significant in explaining what happened to the five years that they were supposedly lost. The pilot episode aired in September of 2018 and gained mixed reviews from TV critics but was viewed by 18.4 million viewers. It was renewed for a second season, and had its finale on 6 April 2020.

The network has not released any news about its third season renewal, but from the conversations between cast and crew, it has a huge chance of getting renewed.

While doing episodes for “Manifest,” Parveen also had guest appearances on many TV shows, the most notable being “American Gods” in 2017 as a young Persian woman, “9-1-1” emergency drama series, and as Lucy Crushner in “Workin’ Moms” both in 2018.

Praveen also finished a Canadian drama movie entitled, “Through Black Spruce,” an adaptation of the novel with the same title directed by Don McKellar.

She was also in the cast of the movie entitled “Acquainted,” with Adelaide Kane and Giacomo Guianniotti. It premiered on 1 December 2018 at the Whistler Film Festival in Canada, and had a limited theatrical release on 5 April 2019. The film producers also entered it at the SOHO International Film Festival in the US.

Personal Life

Little else is known about Parveen’s personal life. She rarely talks about her family except that she left her family home and school the moment she turned 18, in an attempt to ‘find herself’ in Toronto.

She said during an interview with the “Fear Forever” online fan site, that she primarily wanted to get out of the small town in Okanagan Valley and look for other options in life. It just so happened that everything fell into place when she moved to Toronto. She is single and not engaged to anyone; there are no rumors of boyfriends or any dating history.

Interesting Facts and Rumors

  • When she was playing a doctor in the TV series, “Saving Hope,” she shadowed her family doctor in the hospital, and watched him do a caesarian operation in the Emergency Room. • Praveen was a recipient of the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF) award in 2017 for her active role in representing women of color on TV and movies. One of her ways of creating awareness is to use the power of saying ‘no’ to projects that do not clearly and fairly represent her community. It’s her way of opening up a dialogue and explaining why it seemed unfair from her point of view. She believes that the more she can educate people in the entertainment business about it, the more they would understand it better.
  • She was extremely excited when she was offered a role in the TV series “The Strain,” because it was her first big project wherein she had more than one line to deliver. Parveen was also incredibly impressed by the design of the set, and believed it would be her job if she wasn’t an actor.
