Early life and education

Heather was raised in Aldershot alongside her older brother Shane and younger sister Fiona, by their father John ‘Mark’ Francis Mills who was a paratrooper, photographer and a car mechanic, and their mother Beatrice Mary Mills, who was born in India during the Second World War – her parents met while they both attended Newcastle University.

Beatrice’s father was against her marriage with John which is why he didn’t attend the wedding, and only saw Beatrice one more time before he passed away.

Heather grew up alongside her pet dog, cat, and a goose, while the family also had a goat which was free to go inside the house. She studied at Usworth Grande Primary School before moving to Usworth Comprehensive School both located in Washington, County Durham. Heather later claimed that she and her neighbor Margaret Ambler were kidnapped and raped by a swimming pool attendant when she was eight, and because of hurting her privacy, Margaret sued Heather winning £5,000, while Heather also had to pay for legal costs which were £54,000.

Heather and her sister Fiona have both claimed that their father was violent towards them after his wife left him for the famous British actor Charles Henry Stapley – according to the girls, John made them shoplift because he had no money to buy them food and clothes, and he once threw the girls’ brother out of the window, and he needed to be hospitalised.

Heather’s career

Heather moved to Clapham in London after her father was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and she and Fiona lived with their mother and her new partner. Heather soon started working at a croissant shop, but was let go in only a month – she later wrote in her autobiography how she worked at Penrose Jewellers but the owner of the store Jim Guy stated: ‘Everything she wrote about me was lies, I never gave her a job; she just hung around and made tea.

She told me her father was dead. The only thing that was true was that she nicked stuff from the shop’.

In 1986, Heather met a man 10-years her senior, Alfie Karmal, who bought her clothes and jewelry and paid for her breast enhancements – they dated for two years before Heather told him that she was offered a modelling contract and moved to Paris, where she was actually ‘working’ as the mistress of George Kazan, a millionaire from Lebanon. She was his mistress for two years, and during that time posed nude for the German sex education manual “The Joys of Love” (“Die Freuden der Liebe”).

After losing half of her left leg, Heather wrote her autobiography “Out on a Limb” in 1995 with the help of Pamela Cockerill, a ghostwriter – the book was published in the US in 2002 as “A Single Step”, and all the money made from sales was donated to Adopt-A-Minefield, which helped clear landmines all around the world. Heather was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2003 from the Open University for her philanthropic work, and she soon became the vice president of the Limbless Association – in 2004, she won the Human Security Award given by the University of California, Irvine. Heather released her second book “Life Balance: The Essential Keys to a Lifetime of Wellbeing” in 2006.

Love life and marriage with Paul

Upon returning to London from Paris, Heather asked Karmal to marry her and he accepted but only if she would see a psychiatrist – Heather talked to a psychiatrist two times a week for two months, and on 6 May 1989, she and Karmal married in a private ceremony attended by their closest friends and family. She suffered two ectopic pregnancies in the following year, which is why Karmal suggested that she go on a holiday to Croatia with his ex-wife, however, Heather instead began dating Milos Pogacar, a Slovenian ski instructor, and they also started living together in Croatia. Not long afterwards, the Croatian War started, and Heather and Milos ran a refugee crisis center in England helping Croatian people escape war – Heather and Karmal divorced in 1991, and by 1993, Heather had become engaged to Raffaele Mincione, who was working for the Industrial Bank of Japan as a bond dealer.

Heather became engaged to Marcus Stapleton in 1995 after having known him for only 16 days, then in 1999 she became engaged to Chris Terrill, but left him five days before the wedding, telling her friends that he was an MI6 agent, how he was sabotaging her, and that he was gay.

Heather met Paul McCartney in April 1999 at the Dorchester Hotel and they started dating not long after. On 23 July 2001, Paul asked Heather to marry him, and their wedding was held on 11 June 2002, which was around four years after Paul’s wife Linda lost her fight against cancer. On 28 October 2003, Heather gave birth to their daughter Beatrice Milly McCartney, but on 17 May 2006, she and Paul divorced, and she received £24.3 million as settlement (she asked for £125 million) – Heather was also granted £35,000 per year as child support.

The police paid Heather £200,000 while she also made around £180,000 by selling her story to newspapers – Heather used the money to found the Heather Mills Health Trust, which helped people who lost limbs to landmines to purchase prosthetic arms and legs.
