Who is John Rzeznik?

John is an American musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the rock band Goo Goo Dolls. He’s written some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Iris” and “Slide”, and has won multiple awards for his music.

John Joseph Theodore Rzeznik was born on 5 December 1965, in Buffalo, New York State, USA, the only son and the youngest of five children born to Joe Rzeznik and his wife, Edith.

He lost his parents in a time span of a year and a half. His father died in February 1981 from a diabetic coma, while his mother passed away in October of the following year from a sudden heart attack in the family’s living room.

Goo Goo Dolls Formation and Early Work

Goo Goo Dolls, the iconic American rock band that has been topping the charts since the 1990s, had humble beginnings. The band was formed in Buffalo, in 1986 by John Rzeznik (guitar, vocals), George Tutuska (drums, percussion) and Robby Takac (bass, vocals), who had been friends for a long time, and met Rzeznik while he was playing in the band The Beaumonts with Paul Takac, Robby’s Takac’s cousin, and close friend Michael Harvey, who was the inspiration for the band. The band’s name is rumored to have come from a True Detective ad for a toy called a Goo Goo Doll, although Rzeznik says he can’t quite remember how they came up with it.

In the beginning Goo Goo Dolls played covers, but they soon began developing their own punk-influenced sound. They released their first self-titled album in 1987 on Mercenary Records, but it was picked up the following year by Celluloid Records, a larger recording company. The band played around Buffalo’s underground music circuit, and opened for punk bands such as Gang Green, SNFU, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion and Motörhead among others, and also with fellow Buffalo bands.

The band’s second album, “Jed”, was released in 1989, and their third album, “Hold Me Up”, followed in 1990, featuring Rzeznik as the lead vocalist on five tracks. The album received critical acclaim, and was embraced by local college radio and punk scenes. The Goo Goo Dolls then incorporated elements of heavy metal, pop rock, and punk rock into their music.

Their fourth album, “Superstar Car Wash”, released in 1993, received significant media attention. The album’s lead single, “We Are the Normal”, received a major push toward play on college and independent radio, and its video was displayed on MTV’s 120 Minutes program. The album’s success led to a larger budget from Metal Blade Records, and the band’s popularity continued to soar.

Early Success

After the release of “Superstar Car Wash,” the Goo Goo Dolls parted ways with drummer George Tutuska, due to a payment dispute between him and John Rzeznik over royalties. The band replaced Tutuska with Mike Malinin just before the release of their album “A Boy Named Goo,” which became one of the most successful alternative rock albums of the mid-1990s. Despite, or perhaps because of this success, the band found themselves in a legal battle with their record label, Metal Blade Records, over royalties. After the success of their album “A Boy Named Goo” and the legal battle with their record label, the Goo Goo Dolls achieved mainstream success with the release of their hit single “Name” in 1995, which marked a change in the band’s sound from alternative rock to a more mainstream, adult-oriented direction.

However, it was their song “Iris,” written for the City of Angels soundtrack in 1998, that became their most successful song, staying at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 Airplay charts for a record-breaking 18 weeks. “Iris” was included in their quadruple-platinum album “Dizzy Up the Girl” along with other hits like “Slide” and “Black Balloon”. In 2000, the Goo Goo Dolls were involved in a plane crash coming away from Bosnia. They were playing in a concert for US troops stationed in the area, however, on their way back through Italy, the plane skidded off the runway at the US Naval Air Station in Sigorrella. Luckily, all band members survived the crash, and no one had any major injuries.
