Early life and education
Rafe was raised alongside his two siblings in Camberwell by their father, Timothy Spall who is an actor best known for portraying Barry Spencer Taylor in the series “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet”, and their mother Shane who was a nurse. Rafe became interested in acting at the age of seven thanks to his father but when he turned 12, doctors discovered that Timothy had leukemia and he had to spend the next year and a half in hospital which was not easy for Rafe.

Rafe gained a lot of weight due to his problems and dropped out of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College due to having poor grades, and so focused on his acting career. He was only 15 when he quit school and became a member of the National Youth Theatre and at the age of 17 – he tried enrolling at several drama schools but was not accepted, however, he won several roles in plays all of which portrayed him as ‘a fat kid’, which encouraged him to lose weight and become a recognized actor.
He eventually began studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre 2008.
Appearances in movies
Rafe made his debut film appearance in “Beginner’s Luck” in 2001, and gained recognition in 2004 after starring as Noel in the horror comedy movie “Shaun of the Dead”, which follows the story of Shaun and Ed who are living in London during a zombie apocalypse. In the same year, he appeared in “The Calcium Kid”, while the year 2005 saw him star in “Green Street Hooligans” and “The Last Drop”.
He portrayed Lenny in “Kidulthood” in 2006, and was praised for his performance as Kenny in the romantic comedy movie “A Good Year” in the same year, which starred Russell Crowe who is a lawyer, and who falls in love with a village girl, choosing to quit his job after finally becoming a partner at the company.
Some of Rafe’s following roles were in “Hot Fuzz” and “Grindhouse” in 2007, and “Close” in 2008.
