Kim Nam-Joon, popularly known as RM (formerly known as Rap Monster), is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is widely known as the leader and the rapper of popular K-pop hip-hop boy group ‘Bangtan Boys (BTS)’. The group debuted on 13 June 2013 with debut single album ‘2 Cool 4 Skool’ under the label Big Hit Entertainment. The band consists of seven members: Suga, V, Jin, Jimin, Jungkook, J-Hope, including RM.
According to the survey conducted by Gallup Korea, he ranked in 12th and 11th in 2018 and 2019 respectively for the most preferred idol of the Year. In the same year, the President of South Korea awarded him along with his group member the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit. The leader and rapper of BTS, RM was born on 12 September 1994 in Dongjak-gu, South Korea. He was born to South Korean parents and grew up in Ilsan-gu. His parents first opposed his career choice because of his academics excellence. He has two elder siblings and a younger sister, Kim Geong Min.
For his education, in the university entrance examinations, he scored for language, math, foreign language, and social studies and had an IQ of 148. At the age of 11, he became interested in hip-hop music after listening to Epik High’s ‘Fly’. Further, during his school, he had learned the native language and Japanese. He has revealed that the he has learned English by watching popular American Sitcom ‘FRIENDS’ which was brought by his mother.
He began to rap in a local amateur hip-hop circle when he was in the first year of a middle school. Later, in 2008, he had participated in his first concert and became active in the underground Korean hip-hop. However, her parents strongly opposed him to make a musical career because of his academic achievements.

He began to give auditions at the age of sixteen when he auditioned for BBig Deal Record in 2009. However, he failed the second round as he had forgotten all the lyrics. If there is a will there’s a way, likewise, he was mentioned to Big Hit Entertainment by rapper Sleepy who contacted him in 2010. After that, Big Hit CEO Bang Si-Hyuk offered him a spot at the company. After being the trainee for three and a half years, he debuted with the idol group BTS.
Since their debut, he has produced and written lyrics for a variety of tracks for the group’s album. In his trainee period, he had worked with girl group Glam to their debut single ‘Party (XXO)’ that was praised by Billboard. Under the label Big Hit Entertainment and BTS, he released his solo rap track ‘Intro: What A I to You?’. In 2015, he released a single ‘P.D.D (Please Don’t Die)’ along with American rapper Warren G. And a year later in August, he along with Bang Si-hyuk co-produced the title single ‘Dilemma’ of vocal duo Homme. In 2018, he recorded his second mixtape ‘Mono’ and became the first Korean artist to reach one on the Emerging Artists Chart in the United States. Then in January 2019, he performed as a solo song ‘Persona’ as a trailer for BTS’ EP Map of the Soul: Persona.
In January 2020, he and J-Hope promoted as a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association joining the fellow bandmate Suga who became a member in 2018. He along with his bandmates has performed at several events and won many awards including the first K-pop boy group to win a Billboard award. Later they won the Billboard award three times a row beating US artists like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.
